Buffered Multiple with LED indicator

Multiples aren't the sexiest thing to build but they are essential in any system.
Really easy to build.
The choice is between buffered and un-buffered.

Building a buffered one today.

Here is the breadboarded test circuit.

The basic schematic


The opamp can be a TL084 or TL074
The pinout is identical for both ICs


This particular circuit uses a 074


One change I decided to make was to add a LED to give some sort of indication as to the type of signal this multiple was carrying.
Inspired a bit by the makenoise CV bus

To quote the manual:
"The CV Bus was originally designed for Alessandro Cortini's personal Make Noise system. It provides visual indication of level, rate and polarity for up to 4 control signals that will be shared throughout a patch. ..."
The MN CV bus is I understand passive/unbuffered & those jacks have LEDs built into them.

Here is my 1st perfboard 2HP module.

And the rear
I used a 1K LED resistor. ... experiment a bit.
This LED is standard so will only indicate rate & level.
I'll need to use a bipolar LED to get an indication of polarity.


It works !

I'll build a few versions with different coloured LEDs and try some bipolar ones too.


Bipolar LEDs work well.
(cATHODE  to ground)
Use a 470R resistor for green-red LEDs

  28. This project demonstrates the design and construction of a buffered multiple module with an LED indicator, a useful utility in modular synthesizer systems. Although multiples may not be the most visually exciting modules, they are essential for distributing a single signal to multiple destinations without signal loss. By using a buffered design based on an operational amplifier such as the TL074 or TL084, the circuit ensures that the original signal remains stable and unaffected when split across several outputs.

    The basic circuit uses the op-amp to create buffered outputs that replicate the incoming signal accurately. Since both TL074 and TL084 share the same pin configuration, either component can be used depending on availability. In this build, the TL074 was selected for the prototype.

    An additional feature introduced in the design is an LED indicator to visually represent the signal activity passing through the module. Inspired by the Make Noise CV Bus concept, the LED provides a quick visual reference for signal level and rate. Initially, a standard LED with a 1K resistor was used, which effectively indicates signal intensity and speed. However, to also visualize signal polarity, a bipolar LED can be used. When implemented with the correct orientation—typically with the cathode connected to ground—and paired with a resistor such as 470Ω for red-green bipolar LEDs, the LED can display polarity changes in addition to signal activity.

    The circuit was first tested on a breadboard and later assembled on a 2HP perfboard module, making it compact enough for integration into a modular synthesizer rack. The rear wiring connects the input signal to the op-amp buffer and distributes it across multiple output jacks while powering the LED indicator circuit.

    Projects like this highlight how small circuit improvements—such as buffering and visual indicators—can significantly enhance usability in electronic systems.
