Cat Full of Ghosts - XCHGN - video exchange - build notes

Some build notes for the CFOG XCHGN video module
Some personal build notes

Here is the link to the official CFOG page

Most of the parts can be
purchased from mouser

This video module is Eurorack compatable, though I'll probably use it standalone.
It's a "dirty"video mixer  that I plan to use to expand my analog video gear.

There is a expander module which I might build later. It connects here.

\
pretty sound advice :

Small video mixers are not common so this looks worth a try.
This is described as a "dirty mixer" so I expect it will distort the signals as
I transition from one channel to the other.

The RCA connectors

DPDT : on-none-on
x 1

SPDT switch x 3
on-off-on
1k pot - linear

Inductor

 a pretty easy build..

The final pic

The XCNGN (exchange) is all about getting more out of vintage analogue gear.
So what does it do?

The main features include:
    - Two x 2:1 switches to add two additional inputs to your video mixer
    - A dirty mixer for creating distortion and disruption as you transition between two video inputs
    - A passive sharpener to heighten the edges of your signal (a classic effect)
    - A loop out/bypass function to switch from direct feedback to feedback with effects instantly

video feedback - elk elektroniks

I was at Elk Electroniks on Sat and saw an amazing display of Video Feedback using some old
analog monitors / cameras.
Thanks to Troy for bringing these in.

The first few videos used a B/W monitor

Placing and object (such as my hand) between the camera and the monitor
added even better effects.

This effect has been around for decades. In fact it was first demonstrated in the 1950s and was
considered a nuisance until discovered by psychedelic visual artists and of course Sci-fi nuts
As a child I watched Dr Who and was mesmerized by the opening sequences.

Those early childhood experiences are looping back on me.

Video feedback is all about loops that occur when a video camera is pointed at its own
playback video monitor.
There is a delay from camera to display and back.
The camera sees an image, processes it and feeds it back to the monitor, which by
that time has moved on at least 1 image ahead (or may be more).

I think, the greater the delay, the greater the feedback distortion.

and placing objects between deserves more experiments

One final Black/white
and then onto the colour

Many artists have used optical feedback.
An example is Queen's music video for "Bohemian Rhapsody" (1975).

Below the monitor is a video processor (colour corrector) Sony XV-C900
It was used to adjust things like saturation, brightness, and contrast,

Korg Kaptivator - video sampler effects mixer

The Korg Kaptivator dates from the 1990s
This is a mix between a Roland Edirol video mixer and an Akai MPC style sampling playback machine except its for video clips.
They are pretty rare so I am luckly to have scored one the last time I was in Japan.

Its a mixer, a sampler and a FX all in one.
Very useful if you have a limited amount of space.

My basic video set up usually is either a

Korg KrossFour (4 channel Mixer and effects)
and
Korg Kaptivator (sampler, effects & mixer)
with cameras & the odd video synth

or a

Korg Entrancer (effects)
and
Edriol/Roland P10 (Sampler)
and
1 or 2 cameras for live feed and a video synth.

each system has its strengths and weaknesses.
The edirol P10 uses SD cards , so is easier to connect to a PC.
The Kaptivator does have a firewire connection which Ive never tested.

Combining both is a awesome  way to go, though ,maybe a bit overkill ??

Anyway, the reason for this post....
I was having trouble last night getting my cameras to input a live feed into the Kaptivator.
They just wouldnt sync.

Notice the right screen  is divided into 4.
The lower right corner is the video input... its blank
 ----------------------------
Page 14 of the manual is the important bit to read:

To select an external video source
Press the INPUT key to select one of the external video sources connected to the kaptivator.

The VIDEO INPUT indicator shows the status of the selected input.
Input 1 Lit: Currently selected
Blinking rapidly: No connection, or wrong signal format
Blinking slowly: Copy-protected signal was detected

Input 2 Lit: Currently selected
Blinking rapidly: No connection, or wrong signal format
Blinking slowly: Copy-protected signal was detected

DV Input Lit red: Currently selected (DV set to input)
Blinking rapidly: No connection
Blinking slowly: Copy-protected signal was detected
Green: Indicates that the DV connector is set to “Out”
dark (unlit) Input is off (black screen), or Main Out Capture is selected

For some reason it all works fine today.

The important thing to look for is the red lit numbers 1, 2, DV as you press that green input button
If its Blinking rapidly: No connection, or wrong signal format
You need to see a solid RED

This is how everything should work if your routing is 3 Layers

This is setting 31

There is only one pot  for mixing 3 inputs.
This mixer setting mixes between the two clips 1st then adds the external input last.
This can be changed.

For the record,
the cameras I've successfully used with the Kaptivator for live feeds are:

 Panasonic SDR-H80

Sony HDR-XR260VE

a standard CCTV camera

PAL setting (as I'm in Australia)

The Kaptivator's input 1 is a composite.
Input 2 is S-video
I used a simple composite to S-video cable for this input as both cameras are
only composite out.

Allinaire - Hacking into Max for Live Video Device

Allinaire latest track. He told me the video was produced using a 'hacked' or modified existing Max for live video device (details to follow). Learning by experimenting with existing Max devices is a valid way of learning. Whereas other prefer to start from scratch Allinaire dives right in and stands on the shoulders of experienced programers. He calls it 'Circuit bending existing code'!

CMP-DIV Video Effecter - Vidiffektor

I came across an old post on Electro-Music for a video effects box.
 http://electro-music.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=54113

It looks very cool
Credit for this goes to James Schidowsky.
His website is here:
http://www.jamesschidlowsky.ca/electronics.html

The info in the post is very clear with lots of schematics and even a breadboard.
The parts count is very low.
Just two ICs ... a LM339 quad voltage comparator and a CMOS 4040
Should be a fun DIY build.

The Putney and the Video Synth

This is a bit of an experiment running some EMS VCS3 video through a LZX video synthesizer.
The video synth is a whole new world.

Lots of scope for art & experimentation. I just love it.

My synth case so far.
I'm experimenting with lots of modules. As you can see there are some standard Eurorack
modules in this mix that work quite well with the LZX & Brown Shoes Only video modules.

The LZX visual cortex is very useful. It's becoming the heart of the system.

Video on a oscilloscope

Exploring vector rescanning.

Found this video (it's not mine) but I'm experimenting
using the LZX modular system to do a similar thing.

Input the video signal into the z-input of your scope and supply the X & Y inputs with
ramps.

The circuit uses a LM1881 IC - Its a video sync separator.

Here is another video using the same idea:
Creating X and Y sawtooth ramp signals from the vertical and horizontal sync pulses.

Schematic is here:

Using a Tektronix 485 in XY mode
There is a useful muffs post on Vector Rescanning
