Alesis Andromeda - The Clock, Arpeggiator & Sequencer

 
This is part of my exploration of the Andromeda synth.
It's a wonderful synthesizer, which even after owning it for over 5 years I'm still just scratching the surface of what it can do.

The official manual is really long (as you'd expect) from such a complex synth, so this is my attempt to break things down, into smaller parts for myself. If this helps someone else, that great too. 

I'll constantly add to these posts as I discover more about this wonderful instrument.
 
 
 Tempo Synchronization.
 
The clock module is the A6's internal tempo source.
 
It is a global function that provides global synchronization.
Any A6 function that relies on tempo can get its timing from the Clock. 
 Such functions include the Arp or sequencer. 
 
You can also slave modulation sources such as LFO rates and Envelope stages to the Clock when their timing needs to coincide with a song’s tempo. (Normally however, LFOs and Envelopes have their own rates).

The timing can be steady or variable . The clock ranges from 0.458 BPM to 500BPM.
 
Conversely, you can modulate the Clock’s tempo by an LFO or Envelope or any of the A6’s 71 modulation sources. This is accomplished using SYNC/MOD as described below.
 
The CLOCK module is symetrical.
The left is a mirror of the right.
It's divided into 3 parts:
a) CLOCK settings
b)  ARP
c) SEQUENCER

 CLOCK settings

Turning the centre tempo knob will display this page.

The display shows things like;
Tempo - 0.46 bpm to 500 bpm.
START - normal (Freerunning) vs KEYDN (starts with the first key down)
MODVOX - Tempo Modulation by Voice
MODCHN - In Mix Mode, this parameter determines which Mix Channel will modulate the Clock.
SYNSRC - Selects the sync source- local or external midi
CLKOUT - Selects whether MIDI Clock is sent out the MIDI port. 
                    This is a Global Parameter, so it keeps its setting even after changing Programs or Mixes

 ARPEGGIATOR

The left is the ARP section. Pressing its view button will display the page BELOW.

You can see TRIG, PROGRS, SYN and MOD parameter pages.

Similar to a sequence, an arpeggio is musical term that refers to the playing of notes of a chord one after another instead of playing them simultaneously.
 

Arpeggiator settings are made per Program and stored in memory with each Program.
The A6 Arpeggiator is nearly identical to the Sequencer in its basic design. The main difference lies in the display layout.
 
Also, unlike the Sequencer, the Arpeggiator is a per Voice function rather than a per Program function. This means that each playing voice is linked to its own arpeggiator. This results in 16 possible arpeggiators – one per Voice – each with their own status, position, and voice variables. 

 START/STOP Button 
Enables and disables the Arpeggiator. This is a programmable function for all voices in Programs or Mixes. 
 
 
 
SYNC/MOD 
Button Pressing this button displays the Arpeggiator’s SYNC page on the screen. 

 VIEW Button 
Pressing this button recalls the page of Arpeggiator parameters that was last used (it defaults to the CONFIG page).

SEQUENCER

 The right is the sequencer section. Pressing its view button will display this page.
You will see Graph, Config , TRIG, PROGRS, SYN, MOD, run and step parameter pages
The Sequencer is a per Program function: each of the 128 user Programs can have its own sequence that is saved in memory along with all of its other settings.
The sequencer has 16 steps (labelled A to H and I to P)
(You can only see 8 steps at a time)
Each step has 4 properties: Note, Velocity amt, Gate time, Rest on or off (called TYPE)
 
Press soft button 1 to move between NOTE,VEL,GATE,TYPE.
Press soft button 8 to move from one step to the next.
The soft knobs will change the note values (when you are in the note section).

Alesis A6 Andromeda - Midi , Mix Mode & MULTITIMBRAL SEQUENCING

 MID, Mix Mode, and MULTITIMBRAL SEQUENCING

This is part of my exploration of the Andromeda synth.
It's a wonderful synthesizer, which even after owning it for over 5 years I'm still just scratching the surface of what it can do.
 
The official manual is really long (as you'd expect) from such a complex synth, so this is my attempt to break things down, into smaller parts for myself. If this helps someone else, that great too. 

I'll constantly add to these posts as I discover more about this wonderful instrument.

Midi Clock


The A6 sends and receives MIDI Timing Clock. 
This is usually found only on time-based devices like a sequencer or a drum machine. 
But since the A6 has step sequencing and an arpeggiator it can control other rhythm-type units
or be controlled from an external MIDI source. 
 
The Andromeda is capable of sending and receiving on up to 16 MIDI channels simultaneously.
Mix Mode is used for this kind of MIDI application.
 
 
It is possible for the A6 to assign any Mix Channel to any MIDI channel if desired.
In Program Mode, the A6 sends and receives on a single MIDI channel at a time.
in Program Mode you can play only one Program at a time, 
In Mix Mode you can play up to 16 Programs at once, either from the keyboard
 (as layers or splits) or from an external sequencer.

 Or, you can have several different programs on different Mix Channels responding to the same MIDI channel. This means that if you want to play a layer of several Programs, you don’t have to clog the MIDI sequencer with duplicate tracks and messages.

Mix Mode

Use this mode if you wish to send & receive MIDI on up to 16 channels.

Each Mix channel can be assigned to a specific MIDI Channel with unique MIDI controller assignments.
 
The row of rectangular buttons just below the display area are used to select the Programs within a Mix. When a Mix Channel is ON, its associated LED will light. When a Mix Channel is currently selected for editing in the display, its LED will blink.
 

 Pressing the MIX button displays the Mix mode display screen.
 
The page tabs under mix mode are:

The easiest way to use the A6 with a MIDI sequencer is to use one of the preprogrammed Mixes in the Preset or User banks. 
See the Program/Mix chart for the Mix set up for multitimbral use that’s appropriate for your situation. 
 
But if you want to start from scratch or edit an existing Mix, here are the steps:
 
1. Press the MIX button. 
2. Select a Mix to start with using the PROGRAM GROUP/NUMBER, and BANK keys.  
3. Select Mix Channel 1 by pressing the black MIX SELECT 1/9 key. 
     Make sure the right side of the display window has a box that says MIX CHAN 1. 
     If it says MIX CHN 9, press the SHIFT key and press MIX SELECT 1/9 again. 
4. If the green LED above the MIX SELECT key isn’t flashing, press it again to enable 
     the channel. 
     A small box in the display should say ON and an arrow appear pointing to the 
     current Mix Channel. The flashing LED above the switch means the Mix Channel
     is currently selected for editing and is ON.
 
Set the Keyboard parameters 
5. Press soft button 5 (KBD). 
6. If you want to play this mix channel from the keyboard*, make sure that 
     ENABLE is set to ON using soft knob 4. 
     Set the high and low ranges using soft knobs 1 and 2
 
Set the MIDI parameters 
7. Press soft button 6 (PROG). 
8. Set the MIDI channel for this Mix Channel by turning soft knob 6 (MIDICH).
9. Press soft button 7 (CNTL). If the first parameter isn’t MID IN , press it again. 
     Set MID IN to ON using soft knob 1. 
10. If you’re going to be using this Mix Channel to send note messages to
       the sequencer*, set MIDOUT (soft knob 2) to ON.

Alesis Andromeda - Part 5 - Envelopes

This is part 5 of my exploration of the A6

The A6 provides lots of forms of modulation (keyboards, pedals, LFOs, mod wheels
ribbons, envelopes). It also incorporates a "Modulation Matrix" allowing you to route virtually
 any source to any destination. 
 

This post mostly covers the A6's envelopes. 
These envelopes are very flexible and quite complicated.
They offer endless possibilities.
 
This post really only covers the basics but should get you started.
Refer to the manual for more depth.

At it's most basic level, the Andromeda has three 7-stage loop-able envelope generators per voice.
 
 
The envelopes are essential modulation sources for every Program in the A6.
 
Envelopes can be used to effect many things like:
The VCO frequency (ENV 1)
The filter (ENV 2)
The loudness (ENV 3)... connected to the output VCA.
They can shape the amplitude of an LFO or alter the shape of a VCO’s waveform.
 

Default Modulation Paths.

Many of the modulation paths in the A6 are already routed in the instrument’s design.
These are called default modulation paths and are included because they are used so often.
Pre-routing makes setting them up much easier.
 
There are 3 basic default envelopes.

ENV 1 defaults to the frequency of OSC 1 and OSC 2 (It is Bipolar)
ENV 2 defaults to FILTER 1 FREQ and FILTER 2 FREQ (Also Bipolar)
ENV 3, which defaults to the A6’s amplifer -- (positive only)

Of course, you don’t have to use the default settings. 
You can route any of the default modulation sources to a whole slew of other destinations.
 
The A6 has three 7-stage loop-able envelope generators per voice. 
Normally, each of the A6’s three envelope generators has a start level of 0, 
and end at a level of 0. They have four target levels in between.
 
 
 
 
 
 
The 7 stages are: 

DELAY TIME
ATTACK TIME
Decay 1 TIME  (D1 time)
Decay 2 TIME  (D2 time)
SUSTAIN Stage
Release 1 TIME (R1 Time)
Release 2 TIME (R2 time)


Pressing a button or turning a knob on any of the three envelope areas displays that parameter. 
You can also press the VIEW button on the desired envelope and then use any of the
display’s soft knobs and buttons to work with a specific parameter as well as its dedicated panel controls.
The 8 Soft knobs (in the above pic) correspond to Delay, Attack, D1, D2, Shape, R1. R2, blank.
The 8 Soft buttons  correspond to Time, Level, Trig, Dym, Loop, Mod 1, Mod2, Mod3.
 

 

 Envelope Polarity

As mentioned earlier, ENV1 and ENV2 are bi-polar.  
(In the pic above, you can see ENV2 is negative, and R1 & D1 are off)
Each stage level setting has a user range of - 100 through +100. 
They can create unusual envelope shapes
Some synths like the Jupiter 6 allow you to invert  envelopes to -ve values
If the initial setting of the module is at the max , you can subtract from this.
 
ENV3 is positive only because it is hardwired to the final output of the voice. 
It's hard wired to the VCA -- thus you cant reduce loudness to below zero
Its stage level ranges, therefore, are 0 through +100.

As mentioned earlier, the A6's LED display breaks up the various envelope properties.
 
The 8 Soft knobs (in the above pic) correspond to Delay, Attack, D1, D2, Shape, R1. R2, blank.
The 8 Soft buttons  correspond to Time, Level, Trig, Dym, Loop, Mod 1, Mod2, Mod3.
Looking at the buttons, first.

Time Page

Press the TIME soft button to enter this page.
Use the soft knobs to adjust the time settings of the various stages ...
OR press the same button (TIME)  to jump between the various
stages eg Delay, attack, Decay 1, Decay 2, and Release 1 & R2. if you don't wish to touch the knobs.
 
TIME stages can be bypassed by setting their TIME page 
parameters to 0. 
Sustain Level is bypassed by setting its level on the LEVEL page to 0.
 

LEVEL Page Parameters

This page of parameters is where the four levels of the envelope are set. 
Notice that you can use a negative value for any or all of the levels in Envelopes 1 and 2.
 

The TIME & LEVEL page are most often used together to shape the envelope.
+ Level sets the amt of change the envelope will provide
+ Offset  produces fine adjustment of the level amt.
+ Polarity will establish whether the envelope is normal or inverted

 

 TRIG and RETRIG Pages Parameters

An envelope starts its cycle when it receives a trigger. 
The most typical and often used trigger source is the keyboard.
Triggers can also be generated from  incoming MIDI ,the A6’s Sequencer and Arpeggiator, 
and a slew of other trig sources. 
You can even trigger an envelope using the level of one of the other envelopes.
 
 
The TRIG and RETRIG pages let you determine:
 • where the trigger comes from – the keyboard/MIDI, another envelope,
    an LFO, the Sequencer and so forth
 • under what conditions an envelope responds to a received trigger
 • how an envelope proceeds through its cycle once a trigger is received 
  • if an envelope is re-triggered and how responds
 
There are seven modes.
(Turn soft knob 7 to access these) 

This parameter instructs the envelope how to execute 
its Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release stages.

The modes are:
NORM 1 
NORM 2 
FRERUN 
FR-SUS 
SUSREL 
MODTRG 
MOD-TG
 




NORM 1  --- triggers with Key ON. 
That is, the envelope will proceed through its cycle to the Sustain stage
as long as a key is being held down (Note On). 
But if the key is let go before the Sustain stage is reached,
 the envelope “jumps” to the Release 1 stage.

NORM 2 
The envelope jumps to the Release 2 stage (instead of the Release 1 stage in NORM 1)
 if the key is released before the Sustain stage is reached.
 
FRERUN (Free Run)
envelope plays through its (every stage) cycle even if the key or pedal is released before reaching the Sustain stage.
 
FR-SUS 
Free - sustain
 
SUSREL 
(Sustain-Release) envelope mode merges Sustain and Release 1 stages.
 
MODTRG 
(“modulation trigger”) envelope mode is very similar in function to FRERUN, except that the envelope is triggered by a user selectable modulation source instead of the keyboard or other “note source” (the A6’s Sequencer, Arpeggiator, or a received MIDI Note).
 
Trigger Polarity 
 

You can choose between six types of trigger polarity
negative
bipolar,
positive
ABS negative
ABS bipolar,
ABS positive

NEGATIVE The trigger will occur only when the source is “moving in a negative direction.

BIPOLAR The trigger occurs when the LEVEL is reached but the source can be either increasing or decreasing in amplitude.

POSITIVE The trigger will occur only when the source is “moving in a positive direction.”

ABS: Absolute – the following polarities treat positive and negative LEVEL settings as if they were all positive. Thus a value of -50 is treated the same as +50.


MOD-TG 

 (“modulation trigger-gate”) envelope mode is very similar in function to the NORM 1 mode, except that the envelope is triggered by a user selectable modulation input instead of the keyboard.

TRIG  vs RETRIG 
Not only are envelopes triggered, they can also be configured to be re-triggered.
Use soft knob 8 to toggle between the TRIG page and the RETRIG pages of parameters.






 DYN Page Parameters 

The DYN or Dynamics functions permit you to modulate certain parameters of an
envelope “live” or as you are playing the A6. 
 
Access this page with soft button 4.

 
The parameters are
RESET - Normal, Legato, Re-assign, Analog (Soft knob 1)
              Determines what the envelop will do when new notes are played.
              Normal will always reset the note from the beginning.
              Legato will always maintain the current envelope stage, where-ever it may be.
               RE-ASSIGN …the envelope will behave as in Legato mode, with the exception
               that if the voice is being reassigned from a different Program in a Mix, it will
               continue on from the present stage according to the new Program's envelope.
               ANALOG …the envelope will start its attack stage from the present level, 
               not necessarily zero.
SUSPDL - Sustain Pedal Control (Soft knob 2)
                Turns Sustain Pedal control on and off for the envelope.
KEYTRK - Key Tracking (Soft knob 3)
                  adds and subtracts decay & release times depending on the Note Number 
                  that triggered this envelope.
KTBASE - Key Tracking Base Note (Soft knob 4)
                 sets the midpoint between the range of notes where adding time
                  to the envelope and subtracting time occurs.
LVLTRK - Level Tracking (Soft knob5)
                  You can alter the  overall output level – of the selected envelope
                   by the Note Number that triggered this envelope.
VELMOD Level Velocity Modulation (Soft knob 6)
                   You can alter the  overall output level – of the selected envelope
                   by the Velocity of the key that triggered this envelope.
RELMOD Release 2 Modulation (Soft knob7)
 
These parameters relate to how you are playing.
If you play short notes ... its called STACCATO.
Long smooth notes that blend into each other is called LEGATO.
Velocity relates to how fast or slow the key is pressed.

LOOP Page Parameters

Each of the three envelopes has the ability to loop – repeat selected stages over and over. 
The parameters in the Loop page allow you specify how the loop behaves.
 
Access this page with soft button 5.  

This is a great feature.
The envelope can be made to behave a bit like an LFO.
 

There are three conditions.
1.When it starts (eg you can set the envelope to start looping when 
    the DECAY 2 stage is complete)
2. Where it starts (eg which stage?)
3. How it continues. (eg does it repeat, and for how many times)

The page parameters are:
Start
End
Count - This parameter determines how many times the selected envelope will loop
Type (forward, reverse, rock-n-roll)
Smooth
SSshape - selects the slope (EXP/LOG 1, 2 & 3 and SCURV1 & 2)
 

SHAPE: Selecting the Stage Slope

Each time parameter of an envelope (except Delay) has a user-selectable property called slope. 
This term refers to how the attack, decay and release stages accelerate (speed up) or decelerate (slow down) as each stage approaches its target level.
 
The slopes can be 
1. Linear (Rising or falling)

 
 
 
 
 
 
 

2. Exponential 1 (Rising or falling)
    Exponential 2 (Rising or falling)
    Exponential 3 (Rising or falling)
 
3. Logarithmic 1 (Rising or falling)
     Logarithmic 2 (Rising or falling)
     Logarithmic 3 (Rising or falling)
 
 
 
4. S-Curve 1 (Rising or falling)
    S-curve 2  (Rising or falling)
   
The Attack, Decay and Release stages can have different slopes. 
You can mix and match slopes any way you want within the same envelope.


 MOD Pages

 In addition to the modifications offered by the TRIG and DYN pages, 
each envelope can be modulated by any of the A6’s 71 mod sources. 
 
 
In fact, three separate mod paths can be created per envelope from the
three MOD 1, MOD 2 and MOD 3 pages.

Andromeda A6 - Alesis Part 4 - Filters, the post filter mixer.

The A6 has two filters:

Filter 1 is a 12db multimode 2-pole.
It was designed to emulate the Oberheim® Synthesizer Expander Module™ (SEM) which was introduced in the mid 1970’s. It has four fully adjustable modes: low pass, high pass, band pass and notch, just like the original SEM
 
Filter 2 is a 24db 4-pole lowpass. It was designed to emulate the Moog® modular synthesizers introduced in the late 1960’s.

Each filter has four pot controls, 3 mod inputs and a view button.
The pots set the Cutoff frequency, Resonance, ENV 2 and Key tracking.

Key tracking will vary the filter frequency across the keyboard.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Notice that the two filters can be connected to each other. 
There are 4 settings: Off, Mix, Notch & BP.
 
Off
FILTER 2 receives no input (but it can generate tones on its own when in full resonance).
 
Mix
When filter 2 input is set to mix, both filters are working in parallel.
That is, both filters are independent.
Thus the LP,BP, HP of filter 1 & the LP of filter 2 are all available at the same time
 
Notch
FILTER 2 will filter the output of FILTER 1’s notch filter(Low Pass and High Pass).
 
BP
FILTER 2 will filter the output of FILTER 1’s band pass filter
 

The Post Filter Mix


Each of the filter outputs has it's own filter level input pot.
They each also have mod inputs  
 
Notice the BP invert and the extra Pre-filter inputs -
 the sines from OSC 1 & 2 and the ringmod.

BP invert will change the BP filter into a fixed width
band reject filter. 
Thus the Filter Cutoff frequency control will raise or lower 
the centre of this band.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Filter 2 self oscillation

 It's a classic Moog style filter so can self oscillate. (Filter 1 can't).
 FILTER 2 receives no input but it can generate tones on its own when in full resonance.
Set key track to 11O'clock and turn all outputs from filter 1 to off.
Resonance to full clockwise. 
The sound is a simple sinewave.
Press any key on the keyboard.

Filter Feedback

Filter feedback is a popular "trick" of many synths.
You plug the output of your headphone jack into the filter input.
This overloads the filter & gives a gritty, nasty sound 
The button is in the pre-mix section.
The noise level adjustment is the filter feedback.

Andromeda A6 - Alesis Part 3 - Oscillators, FM, & the prefilter mixer

This is part two of my exploration of the Andromeda A6 synthesizer.
 
It's a wonderful synthesizer, which I never tire of.
Endless new sounds ... I discover things every day.
 
The official manual is really long (as you'd expect) from such a complex synth, so this is my attempt to break things down, into smaller parts for myself and others . If this helps someone else, that great too. 
 
Do let me know if there are any errors or omissions. I'll correct them as soon as I can.
I'll constantly add to these posts as I discover more about this wonderful instrument.

Alesis decided to base the Andromeda's oscillators on the Moog 921b.
The Oscillators have been shrunk into eight ASO chips - the ASO. (application specific oscillator). 
In total, there are 32 oscillators (two per voice) with sub-oscillators plus hard and soft sync.
 Each Voice also offers noise (in white, pink and red varieties) and a ring modulator.  
There are 16 ring modulators (one per Voice).
 

Oscillators

 
The two VCOs are pretty much identical.
Each has Sqr, Saw, Tri & Sine waves.
 
All 4 waves can be on simultaneously .
Selecting a waveform is as simple as pressing the button next to its panel label.
The Saw waveform has both +ve  & -ve polarity.
Note, that if you have two SAW waves of the same frequency and opposite polarity, they will cancel each other.
 
Only the Pulse wave has a pulse width knob for each oscillator.
It also has a level control.

Each oscillator has tuning knobs for coarse, fine and ultra-fine tuning control. These three controls have their neutral positions (where A-440 or Standard Pitch is achieved) at 12 o’clock.
 
The OCT LED will light at each octave interval

 You can only sync osc 2 to Osc1.
(the button for this is where they join on thepanel).
You can see it's control on the OSC2 display page. 
 

Oscillator SYNC


Normally, the two VCOs are free runnnig.
But we can sync their cycles.
There are two types of sync
Hard sync will lock phase with fundamental frequencies.
Soft sync will lock phase with harmonic frequencies.
 
 Touching the View button in either osc will display its settings on the screen.
 
 
 VCO MODULATION 
 
The VCOs can be modulated in a number of ways.
1. ENV 1 AMOUNT
2. OSC 2 FM
3. NZEXT
 
ENV 1 AMOUNT
 
 

Modulating the VCOs is really impt. 
Each oscillator has several pre-routed and three custom modulations.
 
OSC 1 is pre  routed to OSC2 for modulation 
(FM synthesis) .. amt is controlled by the modulation pot.

OSC2 is pre  routed to itself & OSC1 for modulation 
(FM synthesis) ... separately & together.
amt is controlled by the modulation pot (ENV 1 AMOUNT). 
 
Keep in mind that negative values invert the action of the selected source.
 
This is the ENV 1 AMOUNT page:
ENV1 can be configured to effect the pitch of both oscillators .

You can control how both OSC 1 &/or OSC 2 effect OSC 2
 

This page is shared by both oscillators.
There are 4 ways to access this page:
a) OSC 1 menu
b) OSC 2 Menu
c) the ENV 1 knob
d) The ENV 1 button

 

 

 

 

OSC 2 FM


 As discussed earlier, The frequency of OSC 1 can be modulated by OSC 2, hence the term “OSC 2 FM”, or “frequency modulation by Oscillator 2”.
 
Because of this, the OSC2 FM page is only accessible by pressing the OSC 1 view button.
 
 
 
 
Quote:
"a VCO oscillates at a rate that puts its frequency in the audible range, as opposed to an LFO which typically oscillates at a slower rate that is below the range of pitched audio. Since a VCO can cover the entire audible frequency range (and then some: 20Hz to 22Khz), its effect as a modulation source for another oscillator is much different than of an LFO."
" When you modulate a VCO by another VCO, the modulation rate is high enough to produce an entirely new set of harmonics called sidebands. The result of this type of modulation is often described as “buzzing” or “metallic”. Also significant in the modulating process is VCO tracking by the keyboard. When tracked by the keyboard, the frequency of the source VCO changes with each new key played, changing the characteristics of the sound". (A6 Manual)
 

The ratio between the frequencies of the modulation oscillator (Modulator) & target oscillator (carrier) are impt.
 
There are two types of oscillator-generated FM in the A6, linear and exponential.
OSC 1 features both linear and exponential FM, OSC 2 features exponential FM only.
Linear = No pitch change will occur except at extreme values. No harmonics are added.
Exponential = pitch changes occur.  Thus harmonics are added when you shift the pitch of the note.
(Exponential is how most synths like the DX7 do FM)
 
Note that the FM output doesn't pass through the Pre-Filter Mixer.

NZEXT

 
NZEXT uses Noise & OSC 1 as a source.

The NZEXT page is a common page shared between OSC 1 & OSC 2
 
These can be used for modulation of the VCOs 

 
 
 
There are 3 types of noise : 
White (high frequency), Pink (mid frequency) & red (low frequency) .

Plus there is OSC 1.

Custom Modulation Inputs

 
Each VCO has three custom modulation inputs.
A lighted LED adjacent to a MOD button indicates that a custom mod has been created for that VCO. Pressing a mod button shows its current modulation route in the display (if any) and displays the parameters that will allow you to create a custom modulation route.
You  can access these three MODs at once, as well as PWM and FM.
 

 Pressing the MODS (soft button 8) button displays a summary table of the current modulation routes for the currently selected VCO.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Reading from left to right, the table lists the modulation’s name, the source, the amount, the offset and the destination. Soft buttons 3, 4 and 5 correspond to the MOD 1, MOD 2 and MOD 3 buttons in the VCO sections and display their respective pages when pressed.
 
Soft button 6 PWMOD corresponds to the PWM buttons in the VCO sections and soft button 7 FMMOD corresponds to the MOD button on the OSC 2 FM knob on OSC 1.
 
 Pulse Width Modulation.
 PWMOD/PWM 
 
 Both VCOs provide for PWM 
 Thus the width of the pulse wave which is set by the PULSE WIDTH knob can be modulated with an external source.This is useful for making sounds ranging from lush string ensembles to thick synth pads.
 
 You can use a LFO, an envelope, the keyboard (velocity, aftertouch or key track), the pitch bend , modulation wheels, pedals or the ribbon controller.
 

Prefilter Mix 

This mixer allows great flexibility in combining sounds in a multitude of ways.
The PRE FILTER MIX controls the A6’s sound sources going into the filters.
 
The module contains 6 knobs and 9 buttons.
4 knobs concern the two OSC and their 2 suboscillators.
1 knob concerns the Ring Mod
1 Knob concerns Noise & external inputs.
 
The level of each of these inputs can be modulated. Each has it's own MOD button.
Press the MOD buttons to access these settings.
 
 Thus this module allows you to mix the relative output levels of the VCOs (and add in their sub-oscillators if desired), select and mix in a noise source or external audio (but not both), mix in Filter Feedback, and set the level of the Ring Modulator. All of these sound elements can be mixed into a Program at the same time.
 
 The Ring Modulator is especially interesting in that you can route it into the Filters as above, bypass the Filters altogether (it has a direct route into POST FILTER MIX) or have both the Filtered and unfiltered signals at once.

 The Ring Modulator takes the waveforms of the two VCOs and multiplies them by each other.

The result is a new waveform that is composed of two frequencies: the sum of the two original waveforms’ frequencies and the difference of their frequencies

Experiment with different VCO frequencies, and different waveforms.
Remember that sine waves have no harmonics. In comparison, square & saw waves are harmonic rich.
 

Filter Feedback

Filter feedback is a popular "trick" of many synths.
You plug the output of your headphone jack into the filter input.
This overloads the filter & gives a gritty, nasty sound 
 

You can do this on the A6.
Press the FILTER FEEDBACK button to enable this function and use the NOISE EXT knob to control the feedback level. Please note that the level settings of the Filters – FILT1 LP, FILT1 HP, FILT1 BP and FILT2 LP – also affect the feedback. Use these five knobs in conjunction to obtain the feedback you want.

Andromeda A6 - Alesis Part 2 - Ribbon Controller & Performance Wheel

 The Ribbon Controller

 

 The Ribbon controller can be thought of like a pitch or mod wheel stretched across the keyboard.
As it has a much longer travel, its more accurate than  a mod wheel.

It can be assigned to any of the A6’s mod destinations and is programmable per Program like the wheels.
The MIDI Controller Number is user selectable


The ribbon can be assigned to multiple destinations at the one time and has 3 configurations.
1. Ribbon Value
2. Ribbon Left
3. Ribbon right
 
 
 
1. Ribbon Value
This assigns continuous values over its entire length.
 
2. Ribbon Left
This divides the ribbon in half.
The left becomes a self contained ribbon.
(There is a centre line).
 
3. Ribbon right
This divides the ribbon in half.
The right becomes a self contained ribbon.
 
The ribbon can also be a control route source .
Can be used to rescale any other modulation in a live performance
 

Ribbon HOLD Buttons 

On each side of the ribbon there are HOLD buttons. 
 
 
When ribbon hold mode is on, the ribbon value will be “sticky”. 
That is, when you lift your finger from the ribbon, it will hold its value. 
When you exit ribbon hold mode, the ribbon value will snap back 

Programming the Ribbon Controller

1. Press the RIBBON button to the left of the ribbon controller.
    This displays its control routes (CROUTES).
     In the CRoutes display a Mod Route can be assigned only one controller at any time.
     Also, only 35 of the Mod Routes can be controlled from here.
 
You can see in the above pic, that the ribbon is not connected to anything.
 
2. Press soft button 1 (CROUTE). 
You’ll now see a list of SOURCES on the left, going through a LEVEL and ENABLE control, to a list of ROUTEs on the right.
 
 
3. To change the sources on the left (to either Ribbon Value, Ribbon left or Ribbon right),
    turn the soft knob 1 or  press the up or down keys when SOURCE is highlighted.
 
 
4.  Turn soft knob 5 (ROUTE),
 (or press the up or down keys when ROUTE is highlighted), 
to display the destination.
To highlight ROUTE turn soft knob 5 very gently, then use the up/down keys.

 The Performance wheels.

The A6 has two performance wheels.
They are incredibly flexible. 


These are mainly used for pitch bend (PITCH) and vibrato (MOD). 
The Pitch wheel is on the left. It is a spring-loaded wheel that snaps back to its center or neutral position when released.
The Mod wheel is on the right. It is not spring loaded and must be manually returned to its off position. 
It is normally used for vibrato.

Of course, you don't have to use these two wheels as described above. Eg you can make both pitch bend , both vibrato, swap them, neither,  etc.
You can assign these wheels to modulate any parameter that is designated as a mod destination. 
You can even assign the wheels to perform multiple modulations at the same time.

The pitch wheel is usually set up so that pushing it away from you bends played notes up in pitch and pulling bends them down. This setting can be reversed.
It can also have a different type of modulation on either side of the center stop.
 

Programming the Wheels

 
To make changes to either wheel, press the PITCH (“Pitch Wheel”) ASSIGN 
or the MOD (“Mod Wheel”) ASSIGN button. 
The parameters for that wheel will be displayed

CHORDS 
 
The CHORD button allows you to play a chord with a single key. 
To define a chord, hold down the CHORD button until the chord LED starts to blink. 
Then, play the notes of the chord and release the button. 
After the chord is in memory, playing a single note on the keyboard will play the chord relative to the note you played. To toggle chord mode on and off, simply press the CHORD button.
