Korg Electribe - History

The Korg Electribe is a classic series of electronic instruments the first
of which started production last century. The range is still being produced today.
They use both analog modeling & sampling technologies.
They started as synths, drum machines & samplers.
The modern Electribes are fully integrated workstations.

Up to today, there have been 4 generations.

--------------------------------------------------
1st generation - Released 1999-2001

    EA-1: Analog Modeling Synthesizer

    1999. Purely a synth.
     Two voices, 1 filter
      Distortion, Tempo delay, chorus/flanger
      MIDI

  ER-1: Rhythm Synthesizer.
     Drum Machine
      1999.
      10 Parts (4 synthesizer parts,
                    2 audio in parts,
                    2 hi-hat parts,
                    1 crash cymbal part,
                    1 hand clap part)
      MIDI

ES-1: Rhythm Production Sampler
Year 2000
This was one of the first samplers that let you process recorder sounds.
They were 32kHz.
This could store up to 95 seconds (mono) or 47.5 seconds (stereo) or recording time .
100 mono or 50 stereo samples can be stored.

MIDI
 12 parts
 EM-1: Music Production Station
Year : 2001
This was the first music production station.
It combined a drum machine and two synth parts.

The drum machine had 8 voices.

Lots of effects.
Eg Reverb, Flanger/Chorus, Phaser, Ring modulator, Pitch shifter, Compressor, Distortion,
delays, etc.

--------------------------------------------

 2nd generation - Released 2003-4

Data Utility - Electribe 2

First press SHIFT + MENU/ENTER

Then use left/right arrow buttons till you reach DATA Utility

The DATA UTILITY section is useful for doing things like
factory resets,
saving an abelton set to the SD card
Format of the SD card
Software updates
Exporting patterns
Importing patterns
Initialising patterns
Exporting audio

-------------------
Abelton .als files

Korg Electribe 2 models can export your music as an Ableton Live Set (.als) file.
The pattern is saved from your Electribe to an SD card.

What's saved:
The Korg-specific files,
An Ableton Live Project consisting of the Live Set and necessary audio files,
No midi data is saved.

Method:
  • press the Menu/Enter button.

  • Use the Cursor buttons and the Menu/Enter button to select the Data Utility menu.

It's 27/28 in the main Menu section

Use the Cursor buttons and the Menu/Enter button again to select the Export Audio menu.

  • Press Enter.
  • select Ableton Live Set as the type.

  • Press Menu/Enter once again to start the export process.

When everything is done, it will return to the Export Audio window.

Eject the SD card and take it to your computer.
There is no MIDI data so a performance can't be recorded.

To do this, I just record the audio of a performance straight from the electribe into my DAW.

To record midi from the electribe:
Each pad/sound on the Korg is a midi channel so create 16 midi tracks (or however many channels you're using) and record this during your performance.

Filters - Korg Electribe 2

I love the electribe 2
Its a wonderful and underrated synth for very easily creating your own sounds.
You can model your own unique drum and synth sounds really easily.

The filters are one of your best tools for doing this.
There are 3 basic types:
LP, HP, BP
They are virtual analog.

You can cycle through each sub group by pressing the LPF/HPF/BPF buttons repeatedly
 -------------------------

LPF
electribe LPF
MS20 LPF
MG LPF (moog)
P5 LPF (prophet 5)
OB LPF  (oberheim)
Acid LP  (TB303)

HPF
electribe HPF
MS20 HPF
P5 HPF (prophet 5)
OB HPF (oberheim)
Acid HPF

BPF
electribe BPF
MS20 BPF
P5 BPF
OB BPF
Acid BPF

A good live performance trick is to cycle through some of the filters.

There's  filter automation available so you can program in filter sweeps quickly and easily.
Press the record button, and then move the cutoff freq knob.
You will notice the record button starting to blink.

Experiment with the EG int (intensity) knob in the filter section.
Increase the EGint to let the Amp EG modulate the filter.

When building a baseline, I usually use the LP filter to cut out higher frequencies.
However, a cool live performance trick is to load identical copies of  your bassline
into parts 1, 2 & 3 , and give each a different filter. The mute/unmute each part
and tweak your cutoff freq, Q and EG int during the performance.
You can even automate some of the parts.

Remember you can also input external audio through the electribes filters.

Step Edit - Electribe 2 (blue/grey)

This is the method for editing individual steps in a pattern.
These are a bit like the per step parameter locks you will find on devices like
Electron synths

There are 4 types of edit available:

1. STEP Number
2. Note
3. Gate
4. Velocity

To enter STEP EDIT mode press
Menu/enter
Use the <    > till you get to STEP EDIT
STEP EDIT is 24/28

 -------------------------------------------------
1. STEP Number
This Selects the step that you'll edit.
Range : . [1.01... 4.16]

Either turn the main value knob
or press the target step (the 1-4 buttons select the bar)

It will be displayed like so:

Step : 1 : 01

1= first bar
01= first step

----------------------------------------

2. Note
Specifies the note number of the target step
Range: {C-1...G 09]
Default : C 04
You can record up to four note numbers in each target step.

-------------------------------------

3. GATE TIME
This is the length of each step.
For example, if the gate time is "96," the duration of the note is exactly as long as a single step.

Range:  [ 00...96, TIE]

If you specify "TIE,"
the oscillator, EG, and modulation are not retriggered if the next step has the same note

-----------------------

4. Velocity
This is the strength of a note.

Range: [001...127]

Korg electribe - basic 1 - saving patches

Some basic controls to get started:

Groove boxes like the electribe offer  many possible workflows.

The electribe has 16 parts, each represented by one of the 16 main buttons.
Each button is a sound ... a drum, percussion, or synth part.

A good way to start is to cycle through each of the manufacturers presets.
Pressing play will allow you to listen to the various tunes/ patterns.
Once you have found something you like stop the sequence & press the trigger button.

Pressing each of the 16 pads will now allow you to listen to each sound without the sequence playing.

A good way to start to learn the electribe is to create original sequences with some of the manufacturer's parts.

1. Select a part that you wish to clear of its sequence.
Use the <PART PART> to navigate to the selected part.
You will see a light under each pad move to let you know which pad is in focus.

2. Shift & Button 14 (clear sequence)
This will remove the sequence, but the part settings are left.

3. Repeat this for all the 16 parts if you wish to remove all the manufacturers sequences.
You now have a palette of 16 sounds to work with.

4. We now want to save this to a new slot, and then write new patterns.
The electribe doesn't automatically save changes so its important to know how to do some basic saving.
     Press SHIFT + WRITE
     The WRITE button will flash
Use the master knob to rename the patch

5. Press WRITE again
The electribe is asking where you wich to save the new patch
To save to a empty slot, use the master knob to scroll to one of the elmpty patches

6. Press WRITE again to finally save.
