ACO - Theremin and beyond - Carolina Eyck

I saw this concert last week and was blown away.
The Australian Chamber Orchestra is my favourite orchestra

It got me thinking all about the technology which is over100 years old.
It was invented by Léon Theremin (born Lev Sergeyevich Termen), a Russian physicist and inventor in 1920.
It was never meant to be a musical instrument.
Leon was working on proximity sensors for the Soviet government.

The theremin is unique in that it is played without physical contact. It has two metal antennas:
One controls pitch (vertical antenna – right hand).
The other controls volume (horizontal loop – left hand).

The musician moves their hands in the electromagnetic fields surrounding these antennas to control sound.
The human body is acting like a big capacitor sucking energy literally through the air to ground.

It today's world the transmission of energy wirelessly is a obvious application.
You may have wondered how a phone can be charged wirelessly.

Both technologies are based on electromagnetic fields and inductive or capacitive coupling, and both involve the transmission of energy or information without physical contact.

The theremin works by creating electromagnetic fields around its two antennas.
When a player moves their hands near the antennas, it changes the capacitance in the circuit.
This alters the frequency of an oscillator, which is converted into an audible sound.

Wireless charging (like Qi chargers or inductive pads) uses electromagnetic induction to transfer energy between two coils:
A transmitting coil in the charger creates a magnetic field.
A receiving coil in the device picks up that field and converts it into electricity.

Carolina Eyck used a D-Lev theremin at the performance I attended in Wollongong.
She began the performance using a Moog Etherwave Pro theremin but mid way technical issues forced
her to swap to the D-lev.

I had never heard about this model.
It turns out that it's bespoke and the schematics are on the net.

The D-lev was designed by Eric Wallin

square pusher @ the operahouse

Tom Jenkinson (born 17 January 1975), known professionally as Squarepusher, is an English electronic musician, record producer, bassist, multi-instrumentalist and DJ.

His music spans several genres including drum and bass, IDM, acid techno, jazz fusion, and electroacoustic music.

This performance was held at The Sydney Operahouse, Sat 03/06/23
In his own words, “I aim to explore as forcefully as possible the hallucinatory, the nightmarish and the brutally visceral capacities of electronic music.”

This performance certainly pushed the boundaries of electronic music.

Tom Jenkinson is a pioneer & I deeply respect people who DIY.
He writes he own software ( SuperCollider & Pure Data).
He has been building his own equipment since age nine.

What a hectic, exhaustive performance.
I reckon the BPM must have touched 200 at times.
Such a mix -- mangling (in a good way) hardcore, musique concrète, electric jazz, acid, breakbeats, filled with twists and turns.
The visual effect is of  data that streams down wires

Just as you latch onto a melody, you are wrenched away

ACO (Australian Chamber Orchestra) & Will Gregory Moog Ensemble

On Thursday 18th May I saw the ACO perform with Will Gregory and his Moog Ensemble
at Wollongong Town Hall.

Some pics from the concert.

Ive been to many ACO concerts over the years and Richard Tognetti never fails.
Always exploring new territory.
It was a mix of classical instruments and analog synths.

An interesting collection of synths.
Sadly no Modulars or a Yamaha CS80

Minimoog D with a Yamaha WX7 wind controller

The Wind controller added another level of expression.

I think this is a Nord Stage ??

Two Moog Subsequent 37s ?? on the left

The program:

I enjoyed Hans Zimmer's Interstellar & Delia Derbyshire's Blue Veils.
Wendy Carlos/Bach's Switched on was wonderful to hear live.
I've only ever in the past heard old recordings.

The finish was fantastic.: Realisations from a Clockwork Orange.
