Make Noise 0-Coast - Basic Notes

Since my recent purchase of a 0-Control, I've been falling back in love with the 0-Coast and all things Make-Noise. These are some basic revision 0-Coast notes

The O-Coast can be divided into 7 parts or modules.
If you look at the synth this way, and study the internal wiring it's not as intimidating as it first looks.
The basic modules are:
1. Midi to CV
2. Utilities
3. VCO
4. Sound Processor (waveshaper)
5. Envelope 1 (Slope).. AD
6. Envelope 2 (Contour)... ASD
7. VCA - Mixer / LPG
It's a excellent example of the bare minimum of modules needed to make a "complete instrument".
Personally, I feel it's more West Coast than East. The lack of a dedicated filter
(apart from the LPG) and the extensive use of wave-shaping remind me of a Buchla Easel.


Though the 0-Coast has just one oscillator, the 1st EG (Slope) can be cycled at audio rates, and can be thus used like a Modulation Oscillator.
The recent addition by Makenoise of the 0-Control makes it even more Buchlaish.

 1. Midi to CV
    Plug your midi sequencer/ DAW here
    It will convert Midi / CC data into control voltages & gates
    It also has an arpeggiator & LFO

2. Utilities
     The upper half has a Clock, Clock divider, S&H & Random voltages (Source of Uncertainity)
     The lower half is the CV processor section comprising things like a
     Mixer, Attenuverter, Inverter & Mults

3. VCO
    Basic oscillator with triangle & square waves.
    Both waveforms are internally pre-routed to the waveshaper/sound processor, but the triangle
    is also routed to the Mixer/LPG (you can break this connection with a jack).
    This module also has linear FM control & a 1V/Oct socket.
    The 1V/Oct socket is where you'd most commonly plug the pitch out from
    your Keyboard/sequencer.
    
4. Sound Processor
    This adds harmonics to make the sounds from the oscillator more complex.
    It can be though of as a timbre module that processors sound in two stages
    a. Overtone Stage
        This mixes 3 waveforms - the two oscillator waves & the slope EG.
        It adds sound that is higher in frequency, yet still harmonically-related to
        the Fundamental.
       !! is where the slope is blended into the audio signal path.
    b. Multiply Stage
        This takes the output of the Overtone Stage & multiplies it, .... this creates additional
       overtones & adds harmonics. This is the opposite of what happens in a LPF.
  
5. Envelope 1... AD "slope". 
     It has Attack / Decay stages and can me made to self cycle.
     This EG is routed by default to change the harmonics of the VCO
     It's internally connected to both the overtone & multiplier sections.
     The EG1 output can also be patched to other modules such as the Linear input of the VCO.
     (it would thus act like the Buchla Mod Osc).

6. Envelope 2 --- ASD "contour"
     This EG is routed by default to change the VCA
     It acts like an ADSR even though it only has a Decay pot -- this seems to represent both
     Decay & Release.
     The Gate input is where you'd most commonly plug the gate out of your keyboard/ sequencer.

7. VCA - Mixer / LPG
   This mixes the outputs of the triangle wave Oscillator with the Sound Processor
   (Overtone & Multply)
   The LPG is a combination of a VCA + low pass filter. (Very Buchla)

Portabellabz VCS3 Card for 208

These are some pics taken during my build of the Portabellabz synthi/vcs3 card/
Its designed to be an expander for the Buchla 208 / Music Easel.
These are un-official notes and I'm not affiliated with Portabellabz.

Trim pots and caps.
The order of placement of my components isn't ideal. It was dictated by the components I had at hand and more were added as components arrived.

This 2n5172 trannie is for the noise. Cut off the centre leg.
You need a to order a few of these so you can select the best one for the noise. (see build notes).

EMS Synthi Repair pics

 Some pics of the restoration of a Synthi AKS

 ....

I had the pleasure of meeting Constantin Papageorgiadis on holidays from Belgium.
Also known affectionately as Papz. His website is Portabellabz


My synthi has some rather unusual mods which was was trying to identify

 The KS - Keyboard Sequencer.
It's in better condition than I expected, though the keybed is rather worn.






These are old caps and trimmer pots. The Synthi is an ex-NIN synthesizer.
My friends want me to try these on ebay. ... :-)

Constantin also knows quite a bit about the Buchla 208
I was lucky to have him look at one of mine.

Buchla Synth Timeline

A brief timeline of the Buchla Synthesizer

1937 ------------------- Don Buchla born in Southgate California

1959 ------------ Don Buchla received a degree in physics (University of California, Berkeley)

1962 ------------------Don became involved with the San Francisco Tape Music Center

1964 ------------------------ design of the 100 series Modular Electronic Music System started

1965 ----------------- The first 100 series is delivered to the SFTMC
                          (San Francisco Tape Music Center). The SFTMC eventually became
                          Mills College.

1967 --------------------- "Silver Apples Of The Moon"  released (Morton Subotnick)

1968/69 ----------- the Series 100 was sold to CBS Musical Instruments

1969 ------------------- Buffy Sainte Marie's album, Illuminations 

1970 -------------------------------------------  the 200 series Electric Music Box

1971 ------------------ 237/238  keyboard created (the first polyphonic modular controller keyboard)

1972 ------------- the 500 series, hybrid digitally controlled analog synthesizer announced.
                               It was designed over previous years.

Buchla 100 series

This synth was commissioned by Morton Subotnick and Ramon Sender in 1963 and funded by a $500 grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. The earliest modules have no company name on the front panel, or are labeled "San Francisco Tape Music Center." The 100 series company was sold to CBS in 1969. These later modules are labelled CBS musical instruments.

The original instrument was installed at the San Francisco Tape Music Center in 1965 and moved to Mills College in 1966.

Buchla 200 series

The Buchla 200 series Electric Music Box replaced the 100 series in 1970. This was a huge advance in technology with greater use of CVs (control voltages)

Buchla 500 series


The first hybrid synthesizer. A computer was now added to to a analog synthesizer aid the process of
music creation

Buchla 300 series (1976)

This system employed digitally controlled 200 modules.
It included a computer 
It's a Digital/Analogue Hybrid Music system . It used Patch IV software for routing control signals and inputting program data. The software was initially developed for 8080 & Z80 based machines

Touche (1978 - 1980)

Used a traditional 61 note keyboard. It was a hybrid digital computer married with analog circuitry.
8 voice polyphonic synth with 3 oscillators per voice.
It was controlled using a computer running FOIL (Far Out Instrument Language).
Apparently only four of these were ever made

400 Series (1982)

No patch chords!
6 voices of Digital oscillators.
Uses the MIDAS computer language to program the oscillators, filters, amps etc
Designed for film scoring ?

700 series (1987)

The first MIDI Buchla device. It also had CV/Gate, SMPTE, and two RS232 ports.
Almost all the controls are touch plate (apart from 5 pots).
12 voices with 4 digital oscillators per voice.... that's 48 oscillators
 6 modifiers per voice.
15 envelopes per voice. Each envelope can have up to 96 breakpoints.
It ran MIDAS VII software

Thunder (1989)

The first assignable MIDI controller based on ergonomics.
The human hand placement was foremost in its design.
Nothing like a standard keyboard.

Lightning 1991

It has two wands or sticks that are sensed by the main unit.

Marimba Lunina 1999

The mallets have radio transmitters in them.
