Moog Mother 32 & DFAM Jam # 1

..

This will be released on my 3rd album - Pursuit of Harmony.

Some patch notes
The Politics of Trust
I clocked everything to abelton using a touchprone MIDI to Clock converter
The sync:
DFAM Trigger out ----> M32 Tempo in.
This really speeds things up.

Another way to sync is:
DFAM Trigger out ----> M32 RUN / STOP in
---

M-32 & DFAM acid patches

Some New Years Day patching.
Ive been planning to play around with these puppies for ages and never quite had the time.
I guess lockdowns have a few advantages

The Moog Mother 32 and DFAM sound great together. I love acid sounds and its one of the first things I seem to gravitate to whenever I play with a new synth.

Though Moog use transistor filters in comparison to Roland's diode ladder filters, I think they still
make for good 303 imitations and add a slightly different feel to the acid sounds we love.

Below are a few different patches to try out.
Of course these are just starting off points.
Working through some of these patches is a great way to learn how to use these synths
Actually, I still prefer the acid sound I get from the DFAM, but these are also pretty good.
https://djjondent.blogspot.com/2021/12/dfam-moog-acidish-baseline.html

The addition of a mother 32 to the setup means its really easy to clock this (using MIDI) from a DAW such as Abelton.
--------------------------------------------

This first patch combines "Tribal Drums" with the "Classic Acid bass" patch.

Patch the gate out from M32 to Clock/adv of Dfam (red)    This is how you sync these two machines.
The M32 is the master.

This next one is the "Acid is the way patch". from the studio bundle.

1. Patch the gate out from M32 to Clock/adv of Dfam (red)
This is how you sync these two machines.
2. Assign (M32) ---> mult (M32) (orange)
 3. Mult 2 ---> VCmix Ctrl (green)
4. Mult 1 --->  LFO rate (purple)
Thus, the signal from the assign out controls both the mixer and the LFO rate.
The assign out jack is really impt in this patch.
This is as the name suggests an assignable output, who's function is programmed in setup mode.
It can be anything from clocks, random voltage steps, triggers, to MIDI CC

5. EG ----> mix 2 (yellow)
Mix 1 & mix2 are inputs to a voltage controlled mixer.
Thus, the M32’s VC mix is used as a VCA. It controls the amplitude of M32’s envelope.
6. VCF Mix ---> VCF cutoff (blue)

7. VCO Saw Out ----> Ext. Audio In. (pink)
whenever a cable is plugged into this jack, it overides the noise to this jack (clockwise position on the M32s main mixer. Thus in this case, a sawtooth wave replaces the noise source on M32’s mix knob.

8. M32 LFO Tri Out -----> M32 Mix CV In. (red)
Thus M32’s triangle LFO controls the mix knob.

9. M32 LFO Square Out ----> DFAM 1-2 FM Amt input. (green)
Thus M32’s square LFO controls the FM depth on the DFAM.

10. DFAM Pitch Out to DFAM Noise Level In. (dark red)
This will make DFAM’s pitch sequencer control the noise level of DFAM.

11. DFAM VCF EG Out to Mother-32 VCF Res In. (pink)
This will make DFAM’s VCF envelope control the resonance level of Mother-32’s VCF.

------------------------

This last one combines the Da Funk Patch with my variation of the big bottom Bass patch.
The original BBB patch set the seq pitch mod switch to off, which disabled the top sequencer.
The VCF mod knob amt is impt.
The vcf mod polarity of the m32 can be both -ve or positive, but +ve is better
(i have it marked -ve in the pic)
And both square & saw sound good on the m32.

The gate from the M32 needs to be multed. One copy patched to the clock input of the DFAM
and another to the VCA CV input of the M32

Moog Mother 32 - set up mode - pre version 2.0

This is the setup for firmware versions before April 2020
The new firmware is 2.0

So this page is for the original firmware.

Set up mode allows you to program things like
1. Assignable output, LFOs, Midi to CV, Clocks, dividers,
2. midi channel
3. Tempo input modes

You can enter setup mode by holding these 4 buttons:
shift + reset + set end + step8. (in this order)
The LED above the shift button will start flashing yellow.

 There are 3 pages.
Use the left/right buttons to navigate to each page.
page 1. Assignable output
page 2. midi channel
page 3. Tempo input modes

You can exit setup mode by holding these 4 buttons:
 reset + shift + set end + step8.
(Push the 4 buttons in this order so you don't accidently set the parameter to 8)

 ----------------------------------------------------

Page 1. Assignable output
This is the biggest page.
There are 16 different parameters in this page.
Step buttons 1-8 select function values 1-8
Shift + step buttons 1-8 will select values 9-16
The value is indicated by green Octave/Location LEDs.

Summary of ASSIGNABLE OUTPUT MODES
1: Accent (Default)
2: Sequencer Clock
3: Sequencer Clock / 2
4: Sequencer Clock / 4
5: Sequencer Step Ramp
6: Sequencer Step Saw
7: Sequencer Step Triangle
8: Sequencer Step Random
9: Sequencer Step 1 Trigger Output
10: MIDI Velocity
11: MIDI Channel Pressure
12: MIDI Pitch Bend
13: MIDI CC 1
14: MIDI CC 2
15: MIDI CC 4
16: MIDI CC 7

Function 1-4 send out trigger pulses from the assignable output jack.
These are linked to the sequencer clock in various divisions.

Function 5 & 6 output one slow ramp or saw wave over the course of
one sequences.
Function 7 outputs one slow triangle wave over the course of  2 sequences.
Use these for example when opening up a filter slowly over one or 2 sequences.
It's kind of like a tempo synced LFO..
Patch the assignable out to VCF cutoff in.

Function 8.
Its really impt in self generative patches - use random output
on each step.

Function 9.
sends a 5V pulse out of the assig output on step 1

Function 10.
This converts the velocity MIDI information (coming into the M32 via the DIN jack
into control voltages (which come out of the assig out jack)

Function 11
This converts the aftertouch MIDI information (coming into the M32 via the DIN jack
into control voltages (which come out of the assig out jack)

Function 12
This converts the pitchbend MIDI information (coming into the M32 via the DIN jack
into control voltages (which come out of the assig out jack)

Function 13
This converts any MIDI information on CC channel 1 (coming into the M32 via the DIN jack
into control voltages (which come out of the assig out jack)
Useful if you are using a DAW.

Function 14
This converts any MIDI information on CC channel 2 (coming into the M32 via the DIN jack
into control voltages (which come out of the assig out jack)

Mother 32 - sequencer - editing a pattern - step mode

To edit a sequence use Step Mode

1. Press SHIFT & STEP

2. Press The RUN/STOP button to hear the sequence.

3.  as the sequencer can only display 8 steps at a time we need to use
the top four (1-8, 9-16, etc) buttons to jump to different bars.

4. We can turn ON or OFF a step by pressing the key associated with that step.
Do this while the sequencer is running.

5. To further edit each step press SHIFT and the step you want to edit.
The step being edited will start flashing.

5a   You can  now add RESTs & ACCENTs using the associated
        two buttons on the left
5b  You can also change octaves during this stage (use the arrow keys).
5c . Changing the step length is also done here.
Use the tempo knob to change the length from 1 to 8
The LEDs will indicate the length.

6. To exit hold SHIFT + the step

------------------
Also check out the 8 LEDs. These will light up when you are playing a sequence.
LED 6 indicates a ratchet.
LED 5 indicates a glide
LED 8 indicates a hold /rest
LED 7 indicates  an accent
-----------------------------------------------------------

Remember to SAVE your CHANGES.

1.Press SHIFT + Record (1 second ... the LED indicating the memory slots blinks yellow)

2. Press SHIFT + Record again

Mother 32 & DFAM - Live jamming ideas

Some ideas for live jamming using a M32 , DFAM, etc.
This form of live jamming is full of experimentation and improvisation

 Not After Midnight patch.
This will be released on my 3rd album - Pursuit of Harmony.
Above is a basic setup
Other options maybe to set the assignable output jack to Random
Mult this and use the CV to control things like filter cutoff or resonance
Thus to clock the two synths,
Patch gate out (M32)----> Gate in (DFAM)
This syncs both synths.
Or make the DFAM the master clock
Trigger(DFAM) to Tempo(M32)

Maybe add a 3rd synth ... another DFAM, Sub Harmonicon , etc

The DFAM Patch "kick bass & Snare" is another good place to start.

M32 Sequencer
1. Start with the default basic 1 step loop  -- it just plays the note C
    To initialise this pattern press:
    SHIFT + RESET + PATTERN
2. Press Step END + Step 4
This creates a 4 bar loop  , it sounds the same as the notes are all C
3. Change the pitch of one note , then another,  then another, ...... till you find a sequence you like.
     Do all of this live.
4. Of course you can start with a sequence you have already prepared and just manipulate
    the sequence live.

Remember you can jump between KB mode & STEP mode while the sequencer is running.
Each mode allows you to do different things to the sequence while it's running.
Press:   SHIFT + KB or SHIFT + STEP
You can easily tell which mode you are in by watching the LEDs under steps 1 to 8
    while the sequencer is running.
If its a single tracer then you are in KB mode.
STEP mode will have each active step lit.

In live KB mode
There are many things you can do.

1. RESET - returning a pattern to step one.

2. Change the pitch of the loop - transpose it
The Step buttons act like a keyboard.
Press them to transpose the entire loop up, and down.
Use the Arrow & Step buttons to transpose the sequence up & down more
    than 1 octave

3. Hold a note
Press HOLD to pause the pattern.
The current note will be repeated at the current tempo while
     the button is pressed.
As soon as HOLD is released, the sequencer will resume.

4. Add SWING
Hold down SHIFT  while rotating the Tempo/Gate Length knob.
    This moves the off beats
The swing / tempo/ gate knob has values between -100% to +100%
    Thus, 12'oclock = 0%,
     -100% is fully anti clockwise
     + 100% is fully clockwise.

when set to a value between -100% and 0%
it moves the off beats earlier in time.
At -100% only the off beats will play.

when set to a value between 0% and +100%
it moves the on beats later n time.
At +100% only the on beats will play.

When set to 0% no swing is applied
All notes are played with equal timing.

5. Accent
Press SHIFT + ACCENT during playback
This adds an accent to every step in the pattern while
   these buttons are pressed.
As soon as you let go, everything returns to normal.
None of your live changes are stored in memory.

6. Mute
    Press SHIFT + Rest
    This mutes the entire sequence.
Good for dropping the melody from the M32 in and out of a mix, while the DFAM
for example is playing in the background.

7. Ratchet
Hold down SHIFT & rotate the GLIDE knob
This will add between 1 to 4 ratchets to each step in your pattern.

In live STEP Mode
Here, the M32 will repurpose the 13 note keyboard & the arrow buttons
so you can interact with the pattern that is running.
Enter STEP Mode (while the sequencer is running ) by pressing
SHIFT + STEP.

 1. turn notes ON or OFF to vary the melody.
The 8 buttons above the Step LEDs are the step buttons
They are used for turning on and off the steps.
Just press the button for the step you wish to mute or turn on.
The 4 buttons (1-8, 9-16, etc) are pattern page selectors.
Use these if your pattern is more than 8 steps long.

2. nudge the pattern forward and back.
    Use the arrow buttons.

4, change the loop length
If you have the DFAM running ... its creating a 8 step sequence.
The M32's 4 step sequence should be running nicely with it, but you can change that length
to be 5 or 7 steps to give variation to the melodies.

   a. Go to STEP mode first (Press SHIFT + STEP)
   b. press END Step + STEP #.

5. You can of course change the sequence length to anything up to 32 steps.

While the step LED is blinking you can modify any parameters of each step
Gate length, Accent, Rests, Tie, Glide on / off, Ratchet count.

   Edit steps
    Mute steps

Clocking the Korg SQ 10 - S triggers

I've been trying to clock or sync the Korg sq10 sequencer over the years with mixed success.
It's one of the limitations of this piece of kit.

Back in 1978 when this was made, there was no real industry standard such as MIDI. The different manufacturers went their own ways. Korg did provide a input jack for single stepping the sequencer. This is the best way to syncronize the SQ-10.

The clock/step input is a +5V trigger to ground.
Normally, the voltage is "high" . When a note is played, the trigger is shorted to ground.
This is also called an S-trigger, "short circuit trigger", or "negative trigger".
S-triggers are used by Moog, Korg and Yamaha synthesizers

(As a side note, the other form of trigger is a V-trigger. It's the reverse of an S-trigger, as it's a positive trigger. That is, normally the voltage is low (around 0 v) and at trigger produces a fixed positive voltage)

If you are trying to sync it up to other gear such as a roland Drum machine which uses sync 24 (also referred to as DIN), you will need a good clock divider, and probably some logic gates for it to work correctly.

Old Korg Drums seem to be the traditional way to clock the SQ10
The Korg Rhythm 55B (KR 55) clocks the sq10 perfectly.

The 55B manual, says you can choose the type of trigger with the switch on the left.

It has just the right outputs which match the SQ10's inputs
It looks like this drum was made for the vintage MS series of Korg synths.

For this to work, there are only 2 settings on the SQ 10 you should use:

Sadly, the KR 55 as no sync or clock input. I would love to add midi sync.
The KR-55 runs at 8ppqn so a clock divider is required if you want to sync it to midi or sync24.
The clock output on most Kenton midi to cv converters is ideal for this (divide by 3).

Other Korg drums that should be useful (Though I haven't tested them)include:
Korg KPR-77
Korg DDM 110 (Super Drums)
Korg DDM 220
Korg DDD 1

+ Korg Drum Machine Timeline
--------------------------------
Roland Drums

*** A Roland TR 606 drum will also step the sequencer.
Use the LT & HT trigger outs. This is a really cool way to
trigger the SQ10. turning on and off the toms will
    stop/start the Sq10.

The Roland CR 78 also sends a suitable trigger pulse.

This is the setting I used.

However, if you wish to sync this drum to something like midi, use the Future Retro Swynx. You can also program new patterns and you have DIN Sync.

-----------------------------

As the step input is a S-trigger, I decided to try a Moog Mother.
And guess what, it works.
The Moog Mother is the perfect midi clock to S-trigger converter.
(and it does a few more things besides)

plug the gate out of the M32 into the step in of the Korg sq10
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the Korg SQ-1 to sync the SQ10,  you need to change the SQ-1's GATE OUT polarity from positive (factory preset) to “-” (negative).

"While holding down the SQ-1's START/STOP button, turn the power on (the unit starts up in global parameter setting mode).
• Press the SQ-1's MODE/CLEAR button to make the button go dark. (This alternates between un-lit and lit each time you press the button: “-” when un-lit, “+” when lit.)
• Press the SQ-1's power button to save the setting."    (Korg Manual)

Sadly, the S-trigger uses up one of the gate outputs, not the sync out.
