Cat Full of Ghosts - XCHGN - video exchange - build notes

Some build notes for the CFOG XCHGN video module
Some personal build notes

Here is the link to the official CFOG page

Most of the parts can be
purchased from mouser

This video module is Eurorack compatable, though I'll probably use it standalone.
It's a "dirty"video mixer  that I plan to use to expand my analog video gear.

There is a expander module which I might build later. It connects here.

\
pretty sound advice :

Small video mixers are not common so this looks worth a try.
This is described as a "dirty mixer" so I expect it will distort the signals as
I transition from one channel to the other.

The RCA connectors

DPDT : on-none-on
x 1

SPDT switch x 3
on-off-on
1k pot - linear

Inductor

 a pretty easy build..

The final pic

The XCNGN (exchange) is all about getting more out of vintage analogue gear.
So what does it do?

The main features include:
    - Two x 2:1 switches to add two additional inputs to your video mixer
    - A dirty mixer for creating distortion and disruption as you transition between two video inputs
    - A passive sharpener to heighten the edges of your signal (a classic effect)
    - A loop out/bypass function to switch from direct feedback to feedback with effects instantly

The offical manual is here:

Cat full of Ghosts - Video Equations

These are my personal build notes for the CFOGs Video Equations synth.
Its a video synth that uses mathematics to produce the graphics.
It was designed by Robert Jordan.

The build was quite easy .. just a few hours.
Ed of Elk Elektroniks supplied all the parts so attending the workshops is a easy
way to build them.
But if you don't live close to Wollongong Australia then you can order them online.
CFOGs is based in Melbourne Australia.

+ official BOM and BUILD GUIDE:

Some pics of the virgin PCBs

I like to start with the lowest profile components ..
in this case the diodes

These are 5V zener diodes. There are 14 of them.

Resistors next. Start with the 100ohm ones ... there are 20 of these.

I think this is LSD

IC headers Next

I've installed the 5mHz Crystal and the push button switches.

The yellow components on the left are Resistor Arrays

The jacks on the right are CV inputs.

Add the 2 Caps, the power input jack & the voltage regulators

+ Voltage regulators (series)

Then the BNC connector & 9V battery holder.

The rear of the PCB:

Pots, & LEDs

The finished product

The 8pin IC with a "N" is the EPROM
EPROM (erasable programmable read-only memory) is programmable read-only memory (programmable ROM) that can be erased and re-used.
The KIT was supplied with two. One marked with a N, the other with a P.
N = NTSC
P= Pal

The 16 pined IC on the right is a Analog to Digital converter:
579-MCP3208CIP

The big chip in the centre is a 32-bit microcontroller
P8X32A-D40

 I'm using a DC 9V supply

Elk Electronics DIY Workshop - Video Equations

Some pics from yesterdays DIY electronics workshop.

This was a video synth build  : The Video Equations by Cat Full of ghosts
https://www.catfullofghosts.xyz/

The workshop was held in Wollongong , NSW, Australia.

All equipment & parts supplied.

A very easy build.
I think this is a awesome way to start DIY electronics.

If you have never soldered before, this is for you.

LSD ?? - :-)

Hako -- awesome desoldering gun !!!

Thanks to everyone who attended.
Such a satisfying day.
We all left with a fully functioning synth that we built ourselves.

My full build notes are here:

The next Electronic Music workshop will I think be held in late Sept in Wollongong ...
Check with Elk Elektroniks for more details.

Address: Shop 266 Crown St, Wollongong NSW 2500

Thanks for organising this workshop Ed.
We all had a great time.
