PE
Over the last decade, ALS Limited's P/E ratio has experienced dramatic fluctuations. This volatility was largely driven by commodity cycle impacts on its mining testing division, alongside unique non-cash accounting adjustments—culminating in a major outlier spike in 2024 when paper earnings compressed relative to share price: [1, 2, 3]
YearYear-End P/E RatioKey Market Drivers & Context
2026 (Mid-Year)35.74Driven by standard revenue growth in life sciences & core professional testing.
202532.3Normalized valuation following consecutive periods of recovering core net profit margins.
2024503.0Massive mathematical anomaly due to steep declines in statutory net profit after abnormals.
202320.0A localized cyclical low as macro-economic tightening slowed market exploration volumes.
202228.7Resilient post-pandemic baseline bolstered by secular expansion in environmental testing.
202134.2Commodity boom rebound lifting geochemical volume demands across global mining sectors.
202029.1Pandemic disruption managed effectively via strong balance sheet preservation.
201921.0Industry consolidation period following historical segment shifts.
201853.8Prior cycle peak valuation before accounting impairments adjusted down trailing expectations.
201727.9Turnaround operational year following the mid-decade minerals market crash.
2016-5.46Negative ratio owing to deep statutory losses amidst global commodities downturns.

🔎 Contextual Insights for Investors
  • The 2024 Accounting Anomaly: The astronomical 503x P/E ratio in 2024 is technically valid on a statutory basis but does not represent structural cash generation. While underlying adjusted operational cash flow remained strong, severe non-cash abnormal items pushed statutory net income close to zero, artificially ballooning the P/E formula (Price ÷ negligible EPS). [1, 2, 3]
  • Premium Valuation to Peers: At roughly 35.7x, ALQ consistently trades at a high premium relative to the wider ASX Industrials sector average, which hovers closer to 12.2x. This reflects structural tailwinds in their globally dominant life sciences testing, testing verification systems, and environmental compliance wings. [1, 2]
......................
Over the past 10 years, ALS Limited (ASX:ALQ) has delivered strong, resilient financial performance, highlighted by record revenue of AU$3.32 billion and a net profit after tax of AU$318.7 million in FY26. The testing and inspection services provider maintained an unbroken 10-year streak of profitability with solid return on equity (ROE) near 20% and manageable debt leverage. [1, 2, 3]
Profit and Revenue
  • Revenue growth: Scaled steadily from past cycles to a record AU$3.32 billion in FY26, backed by strong organic growth in the Commodities and Life Sciences divisions. [1]
  • Net profit: Posted consistent yearly profits over the decade, capped by a strong FY26 net income of AU$318.7 million (a 24% increase year-on-year). [1, 2, 3]
  • Profit margins: Net profit margins held stable in the high single digits to low double digits (averaging roughly 8.5% to 11.7%). [1, 2]
Debt and Financial Health
  • Debt levels: Carries a moderate long-term debt load (around AU$1.45 billion) against total shareholder equity of roughly AU$1.7 billion. [1, 2]
  • Leverage: Maintains a healthy debt-to-equity ratio near 0.92, which is standard and safe for a highly cash-generative global testing business. [1]

  • Operational returns: Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) sits efficiently in the 15% to 17% range. [1, 2, 3]
Dividends
  • Growth: Increased dividends by an average of about 6.3% per year over the past 10 years.
  • Volatility: Payout amounts showed some year-to-year cyclical volatility tied to mining and commodities cycles, but remain well-supported by ongoing free cash flow. [1, 2]

ROIC vs WACC

For ALS Limited (ASX:ALQ), the Return on Invested Capital (ROIC) generally exceeds its Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC). Current financial estimates place ALQ's ROIC at approximately 12.8% to 13%, while its WACC sits lower at roughly 8% to 9.7%. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Value Creation Analysis
  • ROIC (Return on Invested Capital): ~12.81%, showing solid efficiency in how the company uses its funds to generate net operating profits after tax. [1, 2, 4]
  • WACC (Weighted Average Cost of Capital): ~8.06% to 9.72%, representing the average rate ALS pays to finance its assets through debt and equity. [1, 2]
  • Spread: Because ROIC is higher than WACC (a positive spread of roughly 3 to 4+ percentage points), ALS Limited is actively creating economic value for its shareholders through its business operations and reinvestment strategies. [1, 2]

ARGO vs ALS - buffett style sept 2026

ALS Limited (ASX: ALQ) has delivered vastly superior long-term compound growth compared to Argo Investments (ASX: ARG) over the past decade, driven by aggressive global expansion, whereas Argo functions as a conservative, broad-market proxy.
From a strict Warren Buffett-style investment lens—prioritizing durable economic moats, predictable earnings growth, and consistent compounding—these two structures represent fundamentally different allocations of capital.

10-Year Dividend Growth (p.a.)~2.7%~9.2% to 10.7% (Recent multi-year CAGR)

Buffett-Style Breakdown
1. The Economic Moat (The Franchise)
  • Argo (ARG): Does not possess a structural business moat. It is a diversified vehicle holding top ASX blue chips. Its edge relies strictly on an ultra-low management fee (0.14% MER) and 80 years of operational longevity. [1, 2]
  • ALS (ALQ): Features a distinct "Narrow Moat" built on high switching costs and regulatory compliance. Its global footprint in laboratory testing across life sciences and mining assaying acts like a toll booth on industrial production and exploration—a trait Buffett famously favors. [1, 2]
2. Dividend & Capital Allocation Efficiency
  • Argo (ARG): Functions as a traditional "income smoother". It pays out nearly all received dividend income to pass through 100% franking to retail investors. However, its dividend payout is frequently unhedged by direct organic earnings growth, requiring capital gains realization to sustain payouts. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • ALS (ALQ): Efficiently retains a large portion of cash flow (maintaining a ~60–67% payout ratio) to fund compounding acquisitions and global laboratory capacity upgrades. [1, 2, 3, 4]
3. Value & Margin of Safety
  • Argo (ARG): Consistently trades near its Net Tangible Assets (NTA) backing. At a 26.5x P/E, it mirrors an elevated, mature Australian equities baseline valuation.
  • ALS (ALQ): Typically commands a premium structural growth multiple (~32.8x P/E). While it exhibits higher volatility and capital leverage ($1.8B+ debt load), its consistent double-digit revenue expansion provides a dynamic runway for long-term equity growth

More Buffett analysis

Return on Equity (ROE) Trend Analysis
An analysis of ALS Limited (ASX: ALQ) shows that the company consistently delivers high-tier financial efficiency, with a Trailing Twelve Month (TTM) Return on Equity (ROE) hovering between 21.4% and 22.9%. [1, 2]
This is significantly higher than the mid-teens average typical for the diversified industrials sector. [1]
However, looking at the historical trajectory from FY24 through FY26, a slight downward trend in ROE emerges alongside changes in its capital structure:
MetricFY2024FY2025FY2026 (Provisional/TTM)
Return on Equity (ROE)25.7%23.8%22.9%
Shareholders' Equity$1,183.3M$1,279.7M$1,699.8M
Return on Invested Capital (ROIC)10.6%12.0%12.8%
  • The Dilution Effect: The compression in ROE is primarily driven by a rapidly expanding equity base (which grew from $1.18B to $1.70B). Net Profit After Tax (NPAT) expanded significantly over the period ($318.7M in FY26), but the scale of the capital base grew faster. [1]
  • The ROIC vs. ROE Spread: Interestingly, while ROE softened slightly, ROIC actually improved from 10.6% to 12.8%. This points to strong operational performance from their underlying assets and standard standardized laboratory networks. The spread between ROE and ROIC is largely amplified by financial leverage. [1, 2]

Capital Allocation vs. Buffett Benchmarks
Warren Buffett’s capital allocation framework relies on three fundamental pillars: a sustainable economic moat, high returns on retained earnings, and disciplined debt management.
1. The Retained Earnings Test ("The $1 Rule")
  • The Benchmark: Buffett dictates that a company should only retain earnings if every $1 retained creates at least $1 of market value.
  • ALQ's Performance: ALQ maintains a payout ratio of 55% to 63%. The remaining ~40% of earnings are funneled into aggressive bolt-on acquisitions (primarily expanding their global Life Sciences network). With its market capitalization sustained above $10.5 billion and EPS growing dynamically, ALQ passes this test comfortably. Capital expenditure and acquisitions have successfully unlocked operating leverage. [1, 2, 3, 4]
2. The Moat & Pricing Power
  • The Benchmark: Buffett prioritizes companies with a structural competitive advantage that can maintain high returns without losing market share to competition.
  • ALQ's Performance: Passing. Analysts recently upgraded ALQ to a narrow economic moat, validating its structural cost advantages and global scale. Its massive, centralized testing footprint allows it to underbid fragmented local competitors, protecting its strong ~17.5% operating margins. [1, 2]
3. Debt and Financial Risk
  • The Benchmark: Berkshire Hathaway avoids companies that generate high ROE purely by stacking high layers of risky debt.
  • ALQ's Performance: A Flag for Caution. ALQ’s total debt profile has expanded significantly to fund its M&A strategy, pushing its debt-to-equity ratio up past 1.62 in recent cycles. While its Net Debt/EBITDA is managed at a manageable ~1.7x, the heavy reliance on leverage means its impressive >21% ROE is partially engineered via the balance sheet rather than pure organic equity efficiency. [1, 2, 3]
Strategic Summary
From a Buffett perspective, ALQ is a high-quality, moated franchise with phenomenal pricing power and an asset-light structure in key divisions. However, a purist value investor would flag its recent debt-fueled acquisition pace. The core metric to monitor moving forward is whether future earnings growth from these newly acquired global laboratories outpaces the rising cost of servicing that debt. [1, 2, 3]

Roland Tr-707 & 727 - Changing the sync mode

The 707 drum can be synced (slaved) to external sequencers or synths.
It can also act as the master timing device.

Master Mode.
In MASTER MODE, the drum sends DIN, Tape and MIDI sync data at the same time.
This is in both Track mode and in Pattern mode.
I think if your devices require both DIN and MIDI syncing, then setting the 707 as a master is the easiest way to combine things.
Din Sync is best with vintage roland gear like the TB 303 , TR 606, 808 & 909.

Slave Mode

Use use this procedure to change the sync settings between internal, MIDI,
tape, and din sync on the TR-707/727:

1) Enter Track Play mode.
2) Press the STOP button to stop the rhythm if it is running.
3) While holding SHIFT, press SYNC MODE to change between the
different slave/sync modes.

Display will show:

5-d = DIN Sync
5-t = Tape Sync
5-n = MIDI Sync
Number (Tempo Value) = Internal Sync

4. Make sure you go back to PATTERN mode.

If you are using Midi sync, any of the 16 channels wont matter.
