A correction to my table
I included the Omega 861/1861 at #22 even though it is manual-wind, so strictly speaking it shouldn't be in an automatic top 30. I'd replace it with:
#22 — Seiko 4R36
That gives you a genuine automatic movement.
The five I'd consider the "greatest"
If I had to reduce the entire history to five, I'd choose:
🥇 Rolex 3135 — greatest all-rounder
This is probably my #1.
Introduced in 1988, it became the benchmark for a robust, accurate, relatively simple luxury automatic.
It has:
- 31 jewels
- 28,800 vph
- free-sprung balance
- full balance bridge
- excellent shock resistance
- highly effective automatic winding
- enormous service history
Its greatest achievement isn't that it is spectacular.
It's that it is spectacularly dependable.
🥈 Zenith El Primero — greatest chronograph
The El Primero is historically extraordinary.
Introduced in 1969, it ran at 36,000 vph / 5 Hz and was one of the first successful automatic chronographs.
It remains one of the most important mechanical chronograph movements ever produced.
🥉 Omega 8500/8900 — greatest modern engineering
This is where I think Omega deserves enormous credit.
The combination of:
Co-Axial escapement + silicon components + anti-magnetic construction + METAS certification
makes the modern Omega movement a technological powerhouse.
It's arguably more technically advanced than the Rolex 3135.
#4 ETA 2824-2 — greatest workhorse
This might actually be the most important movement commercially.
Think of it as the mechanical equivalent of a Toyota engine.
It is:
- cheap
- reliable
- easy to service
- widely available
- accurate when regulated properly
- supported by decades of parts and knowledge
Thousands of watches have used it.
#5 Patek 240 / AP 2121 / VC 1120 — greatest ultra-thin class
Here I'd almost call it a three-way tie.
These movements demonstrate a completely different philosophy.
The objective isn't maximum robustness.
It's:
How much mechanical sophistication can we fit into an extremely thin movement?
That's one of the hardest problems in mechanical watchmaking.

But there's a fascinating distinction
If you're thinking about buying an automatic watch, I wouldn't necessarily buy the #1 movement.
For example:
ETA 2824
can be a better ownership proposition than an extremely complicated haute-horlogerie movement.
Why?
Because after 20–30 years you want:
Parts + watchmaker expertise + reliability + reasonable servicing cost
rather than simply the most beautiful movement.
That's why the humble ETA 2824, Sellita SW200, Miyota 9015 and Seiko 4R/6R families are so important.
