Grand Seiko - history

 Grand Seiko was born in 1960 when Japanese manufacturer Seiko set out to build the "ideal watch" capable of rivaling and beating the finest Swiss chronometers.

 Grand Seiko is particularly interesting because its history is really three stories running in parallel:

  1. The pursuit of precision
  2. The development of Japanese watchmaking and finishing
  3. The evolution from mechanical → quartz → Spring Drive, while retaining the same philosophy

And unlike many Swiss brands, Grand Seiko's identity isn't primarily about complications or historical watchmaking traditions. It is about accuracy, finishing, legibility, durability and restrained Japanese design.

The Birth and Early Innovations (1960s)
  • The First Model (1960): The inaugural Grand Seiko 3180 was crafted at the Suwa Seikosha factory, featuring a manual-wind movement and high precision. [1]
  • Internal Rivalry: Seiko split its high-end development between two factories—Suwa Seikosha and Daini Seikosha—driving rapid technological competition. [1, 2]
  • Grammar of Design (1967): The iconic 44GS established the brand's distinct aesthetic with sharp, mirror-polished flat surfaces using traditional Zaratsu polishing. [1, 2]

1. 1960 — The birth of Grand Seiko


The first Grand Seiko was produced in Nagano and was essentially Seiko saying:

"We can make a world-class watch."

The first watch was the Grand Seiko 3180.

Calibre 3180

  • Manual wind
  • 18,000 vph
  • 25 jewels
  • Diashock
  • Hacking seconds
  • Fine regulation
  • Large balance
  • Around 45 hours power reserve
  • Very high accuracy for its time

The important thing is that Seiko didn't simply make a more expensive Seiko.

It established a separate engineering philosophy.

Grand Seiko was supposed to be:

accurate + durable + legible + beautiful.

That philosophy remains surprisingly unchanged today.

2. 1964 — Grand Seiko Self-Dater

The second-generation GS added practical features:

GS Self-Dater

  • Automatic versions followed
  • Date
  • 50 m water resistance
  • More practical everyday case

This is important because GS wasn't intended to be a fragile dress watch.

The concept was:

the best practical watch Seiko could build.

3. 1966 — The Grand Seiko Standard

This is one of the most important events in the entire story.

Seiko decided that ordinary chronometer standards weren't good enough.

So it created its own:

Grand Seiko Standard

Initially:

+6 / −3 seconds per day

Later:

+5 / −3 seconds per day

And the testing was considerably more demanding than ordinary chronometer testing.

This obsession with testing becomes a recurring theme.

Grand Seiko isn't simply interested in a movement being theoretically accurate.

It wants the finished watch to be accurate under different positions and temperatures.

4. 1967 — The 44GS changes everything

If you remember only one vintage Grand Seiko, make it the:

44GS

This is arguably the most important GS ever made.

Why?

Because it established what is now called:

The Grand Seiko Style

The 44GS introduced the visual vocabulary that defines GS even today:
  • Flat case surfaces
  • Sharp transitions
  • Very sharp lugs
  • Broad polished surfaces
  • Hairline brushing
  • Highly faceted hands
  • Highly faceted indices
  • Mirror-polished bezel
  • Strong contrast between polished and brushed surfaces
  • Relatively restrained dial
  • Excellent legibility

The goal was something Seiko called the:

"sparkle of quality"

The case should catch light in a very distinctive way.

That is where Zaratsu polishing becomes crucial.

5. What is Zaratsu polishing?

This is one of the things that separates GS from ordinary Seiko.

Zaratsu isn't simply "high polish."

It involves creating extremely flat, distortion-free polished surfaces.

On a normal polished watch case, you can often see slight distortion in reflections.

On a beautifully executed GS:

the reflection is almost like a mirror.

And then GS puts a sharp transition next to that polished surface.

So you get:

mirror → razor edge → brushed surface → razor edge → mirror

This produces an extraordinary amount of visual activity without decorating the watch excessively.

That's a very Japanese approach to luxury.

6. 1967 — 62GS

The other critical watch from 1967 was the:

62GS

It was the first automatic Grand Seiko.

The 62GS introduced several distinctive features:

  • Bezel-less appearance
  • Huge dial opening
  • Sharp case
  • Recessed crown at 4 o'clock
  • Zaratsu polishing

The 4 o'clock crown was particularly clever.

Because it was automatic, there was no need to wind the watch manually.

So the crown could be moved out of the way.

The result was a very clean dial-side appearance.

7. 1968 — 61GS

Now Grand Seiko started pushing mechanical technology very hard.

61GS

This was:

Japan's first automatic 10-beat watch.

10 beats per second = 36,000 vibrations/hour.

That is significant because higher frequency can improve resistance to disturbances and positional errors.

But it creates another problem:

higher frequency consumes more energy and puts greater demands on the escapement.

The 61GS used Seiko's Magic Lever winding system.

This period represents the first great mechanical GS era.

8. 1968 — 45GS

The 45GS was the manual-winding counterpart.

It used a 10-beat movement but in a relatively thin package.

This became one of the great mechanical GS families.

And then things got crazy.

9. 1969 — V.F.A.

V.F.A. means:

Very Fine Adjusted

These were the extreme-performance Grand Seikos.

The objective was essentially:

how accurate can we make a mechanical wristwatch?

Some V.F.A. models achieved approximately:

±1 minute per month

That's roughly:

±2 seconds per day

for a mechanical watch.

That's remarkable even today.

The 61GS V.F.A. and 45GS V.F.A. are consequently among the most important and collectible vintage Grand Seikos.

10. 1970s — Mechanical GS reaches its peak

Grand Seiko continued developing:

56GS

A thinner, more practical automatic movement.

61GS Special

A highly adjusted version of the 61GS.

19GS

Smaller women's mechanical movements.

The 56GS is particularly interesting because it shows Seiko beginning to balance:

precision + thinness + everyday wearability.

Then something extraordinary happened...

Grand Seiko disappeared.

The quartz revolution changed everything.

Seiko became one of the world's most important pioneers of quartz technology, and mechanical Grand Seiko production eventually stopped.

For roughly a decade and a half, Grand Seiko essentially disappeared from the market.

But Seiko wasn't abandoning precision.

It was changing the definition of precision.

11. 1988 — Grand Seiko returns

The first new-generation GS was the:

95GS

And it was quartz.

Accuracy:

±10 seconds per year

That's an extraordinary number.

Remember, a very good mechanical watch might achieve:

±3–5 seconds/day

The 95GS was operating at roughly:

±0.03 seconds/day

The philosophy had changed from:

"How do we make the best mechanical watch?"

to:

"How do we make the best watch?"

And that led directly to the famous 9F.

12. 1993 — The 9F Quartz

The 9F
is arguably one of the greatest quartz movements ever made.
And this is where Grand Seiko gets really interesting.

Most people think:
quartz = cheap + disposable.

Grand Seiko's answer was essentially:
"What if we built quartz like a mechanical movement?"

9F incorporates:

  • Highly accurate quartz crystal
  • Twin-pulse motor
  • Backlash auto-adjust mechanism
  • Instant date change
  • Separate gear train architecture
  • Protective movement construction
  • Individually selected quartz crystals
  • Temperature compensation
The result was an exceptionally robust quartz movement.
Grand Seiko's own description at the time was:

"Quartz that surpasses quartz."

The 9F83 was rated around ±10 seconds/year.

13. 1998 — Mechanical Grand Seiko returns

This is another watershed moment.

9S55

After roughly two decades without a modern mechanical GS, Seiko brought mechanical Grand Seiko back.

The 9S family became the foundation of modern mechanical GS.

The philosophy was now:

traditional watchmaking + modern manufacturing technology.

And this is where modern Grand Seiko really begins.

14. 9S — the mechanical family

Think of 9S as the mechanical engine room of Grand Seiko.

Over time it evolved considerably.

9S55

Early modern automatic GS.

9S65

Modern 3-day automatic.

9S85

Hi-Beat 36,000.

9S86

Hi-Beat + GMT.

9S27

Smaller automatic movement.

9SA5

Modern-generation Hi-Beat.

15. Hi-Beat returns

One of the most important modern movements is:

9S85

Operating at:

36,000 vph

or:

10 beats per second.

It provides:

  • High frequency
  • Strong positional stability
  • Approximately 55-hour reserve

And the GMT version is:

9S86

This is one of the watches I'd put near the top of the modern mechanical GS hierarchy.

16. Spring Drive — Grand Seiko's greatest technological achievement?

This is where Grand Seiko becomes genuinely unique.

Spring Drive

The idea is fascinating.

It's:

mechanically powered

but:

electronically regulated.

There is:

  • No battery
  • No conventional escapement
  • No traditional balance wheel

Instead:

Mainspring

Gear train

Glide wheel

Electricity generated

Quartz oscillator + IC

Electromagnetic brake

Precise regulation

This is called the:

Tri-Synchro Regulator

It synchronises:

  1. Mechanical energy
  2. Electrical energy
  3. Electromagnetic energy

The result is one of the most beautiful technical characteristics in watchmaking:

The seconds hand glides continuously.

There is no tick.

No step.

It simply moves.

17. 2004 — 9R65

This was the breakthrough Grand Seiko Spring Drive movement.

9R65

  • Automatic
  • Spring Drive
  • 72-hour power reserve
  • Approximately ±1 second/day
  • Extremely smooth seconds hand

It transformed Spring Drive from an interesting technology into a genuine Grand Seiko platform.

And then came one of the most famous GS watches ever:

The Snowflake

SBGA011 / SBGA211

The "Snowflake" is probably the single Grand Seiko model most responsible for introducing the brand to a worldwide audience.

Its combination of:

  • Titanium
  • Textured white dial
  • Blue seconds hand
  • Spring Drive
  • Zaratsu case
  • understated design

is quintessential GS.


18. 2007 — Grand Seiko Chronograph

Spring Drive also allowed GS to produce:

9R86

A Spring Drive chronograph with GMT.

This was a very important technical milestone.

It showed that Spring Drive wasn't merely an alternative three-hand movement.

It could form the basis for sophisticated complications.


19. 2016 — 8-day Spring Drive

Grand Seiko then went seriously high-end.

9R01

An 8-day Spring Drive movement.

It uses:

Three barrels

rather than the normal one or two.

This provides approximately:

192 hours

of power reserve.

This sits in the territory where Grand Seiko starts moving from "high-end production watch" toward haute horlogerie.


20. 2020 — the big modern mechanical revolution

This is one of my favourite parts of GS history.

Grand Seiko introduced:

9SA5

This was a completely new high-beat movement.

And it contains some seriously sophisticated engineering.

36,000 vph

80-hour power reserve

That's impressive because high frequency normally consumes more power.

Grand Seiko solved this using:

Dual Impulse Escapement

It combines:

  • Direct impulse
  • Indirect impulse

with highly sophisticated MEMS-manufactured components.

It also uses:

Twin barrels

and a new:

Grand Seiko overcoil

The result is a high-beat movement with an unusually long power reserve.

Grand Seiko describes the 9SA5 as having an 80-hour reserve at 36,000 vph.

21. 2020 — 9RA5 / 9RA2

At roughly the same time, Spring Drive received its own major technological upgrade.

9RA5 / 9RA2

These are essentially the next generation of Spring Drive.

Major improvements include:

  • 5-day power reserve
  • Higher efficiency
  • Smaller/thinner architecture
  • Improved regulation
  • Improved resistance to temperature changes
  • Better shock resistance

So you now have two extraordinary modern movement families:

9SA5

Mechanical
36,000 vph
80 hours

9RA5

Spring Drive
5 days
approximately ±1 sec/day

This is where modern GS really starts competing technically with the very best Swiss manufacture movements.


22. 2021 — Evolution 9

Then Grand Seiko modernised its design language.

The landmark model was:

SLGH005 "White Birch"

It uses the 9SA5.

This established:

Evolution 9 Style

It isn't a rejection of the 44GS.

It's an evolution of it.

The key changes are:

  • Wider lugs
  • Lower centre of gravity
  • Thicker hands
  • Thicker indices
  • Greater legibility
  • More contemporary case
  • More aggressive brushing
  • Stronger wrist presence
  • Improved bracelet ergonomics

Grand Seiko describes the three objectives as:

aesthetics + legibility + wearing comfort.


23. 2025–26 — U.F.A.

Grand Seiko has now pushed Spring Drive accuracy even further.

U.F.A.

Meaning:

Ultra Fine Accuracy

The new-generation 9RB2 achieves approximately:

±20 seconds per year

That's remarkable.

It's essentially bringing the accuracy philosophy of high-end quartz into a mechanically powered Spring Drive architecture.

The current Evolution 9 range is also expanding, with 2026 models using 9RB2 and new versions of 9SA5.

Grand Seiko's three movement families

This is the easiest way to understand modern GS:

This is where it becomes easier to understand the current catalogue.

1. Heritage

This is the closest to the original GS.

Think:

44GS / 62GS / 1960s design language

Sharp cases, conservative proportions and extremely legible dials.

Examples:

  • SBGH
  • SBGA
  • SBGW
  • SBGX

The Heritage Collection explicitly draws on the 44GS and 62GS.


2. Elegance

More traditional dress-watch styling.

Think:

  • Smaller cases
  • Leather straps
  • More curved cases
  • Slimmer profiles
  • Traditional proportions
  • Manual winding

The SBGW family is particularly interesting here.


3. Sport

Grand Seiko's more robust side.

Includes:

  • Divers
  • GMTs
  • Chronographs
  • Larger cases
  • Titanium
  • Higher water resistance

This is where GS can sometimes look much more like a serious tool watch.


4. Evolution 9

The modern flagship design language.

Think:

44GS + modern engineering + improved ergonomics.

The SLGH005 and SLGA009 are particularly important.


5. Masterpiece

This is where Grand Seiko goes into serious haute horlogerie territory.

These watches can feature:

  • Precious metals
  • Hand-finished movements
  • Extremely elaborate dials
  • Micro Artist Studio Spring Drive
  • High-end hand craftsmanship

The Masterpiece Collection currently includes Spring Drive watches from the Micro Artist Studio and mechanical watches from Atelier Ginza.


The Grand Seiko dial is another story

One of the things that makes GS special is that the dial is often as important as the movement.

Think:

Snowflake

Textured white

White Birch

Deep birch-tree texture

Mt. Iwate

Landscape-inspired textures

Lake Suwa

Water-inspired textures

Shunbun

Pink/green seasonal aesthetic

Shōsho

Summer-inspired dial

The philosophy is very Japanese:

nature → texture → light → shadow.

Rather than simply putting decoration onto a dial, GS often tries to make the dial appear as though it represents a Japanese landscape.


Why Grand Seiko looks so different from Rolex

This is an important distinction.

Rolex tends to emphasise:

recognition + robustness + engineering + status

Grand Seiko emphasises:

precision + light + finishing + nature + restraint

A Rolex case often looks rounded and smooth.

A GS case often looks almost architectural.

You get:

flat plane → sharp edge → mirror → shadow → brushed surface.

That's the GS signature.


The two Japanese factories

Modern GS effectively has two major technical homes.

Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi

Primarily associated with:

mechanical 9S

Shinshu Watch Studio

Primarily associated with:

Spring Drive + quartz

There is also the elite:

Micro Artist Studio

which produces some of the highest-end Spring Drive watches.

Grand Seiko's history isn't really:

1960 → 1970 → 1980 → 1990 → 2000.

It's more like:

And that is why I think Grand Seiko is one of the most fascinating watch manufacturers in the world technically, rather than simply being "Japan's answer to Rolex."
