VH31 quartz movement

I purchased this to see how a VH31 movement looked
The watch has a 10Bar rating and a screwdown crown so hopefully will survive a shower

The Seiko VH31 is a sweep-second quartz movement made by TMI (Time Module Inc.), a subsidiary of Seiko. [1, 2]
It combines the accuracy and grab-and-go convenience of quartz with the smooth, sweeping second hand of a mechanical watch. [1, 2]
How It Works
  • Sweep Motion: Standard quartz movements tick once per second. The VH31 "pulses" four times per second (a 2 Hz beat rate or 14,400 vph), creating a fluid, mechanical-like sweep. [1, 2, 3]
  • High Torque: It generates about 0.30 µN-m of torque—roughly 400% more than typical base quartz movements—allowing it to easily power longer or heavier watch hands. [1, 2]
  • Jewels: Unlike many basic quartz movements that contain zero jewels, the VH31 features two jewels to reduce wear and improve efficiency. [1]
Key Specifications
  • Accuracy: Rated at ±15 seconds per month.
  • Battery Life: Uses an SR920SW battery that lasts approximately 2 years.
  • Thickness: Slim profile measuring 3.45mm thick, making it ideal for thin, lightweight watch designs.
  • Complications: Features a three-hand time display (hours, minutes, seconds) and a hacking-seconds feature, but does not support a date window. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
Why Watch Enthusiasts Like It
  • No Winding Needed: It offers the visual appeal of an automatic watch without stopping or requiring manual winding if left sitting for a few days. [1, 2, 3]
  • Affordability & Reliability: Brands use the VH31 to build dependable, thin field, dress, and dive watches at a fraction of the cost of mechanical movements. [1, 2, 3]
