Valjoux 7750 — the chronograph that conquered the world
The Valjoux 7750 is arguably the most important automatic chronograph movement ever produced.
Designed by Edmond Capt in the early 1970s, it was originally intended to provide an inexpensive automatic chronograph for the post-quartz era.
Instead, it became enormously successful. 50 + years in production
It's a tank to service. Excellent. Easy parts availability
25 jewels. Every Swiss brand used this movement.
$700 - 900 for a complete movement.

You will find versions of the architecture in watches from:
- IWC
- Breitling
- TAG Heuer
- Sinn
- Tudor
- Longines
- Omega
- countless others
Its cam switching system was particularly important because it made automatic chronographs much easier and cheaper to manufacture than traditional column-wheel designs.
It is flexible ... can be used as a manual two hand windup to the most complicated perpetual calendar, split seconds, etc
ETA 2824-2 — the people's automatic
The ETA SA 2824 is arguably the most consequential Swiss automatic movement of the modern era.
Introduced in the 1970s, its architecture became the basis for thousands of watches from entry-level Swiss watches through quite serious luxury products.
Its importance comes from:
- simple, robust architecture
- 25 jewels
- 28,800 vph
- hacking seconds
- hand-winding
- inexpensive mass production
- enormous parts availability
- easy servicing
- 50 M to 100M units produced
- Lots of spare parts
- $300 AUD for a movement
Sellita, Soprod and numerous other manufacturers subsequently produced movements heavily influenced by the same basic architecture. Lots of brands use this.
Historical importance: 10/10
Rolex 3135 — the benchmark
The Rolex 3135 appeared in 1988 and remained in production for roughly three decades.
It wasn't revolutionary in the same way as Spring Drive or El Primero.
That's precisely why it's important.
It represented an extraordinarily successful refinement of the traditional Swiss automatic:
robust + accurate + easily serviceable + highly resistant to abuse.
The 3135 became the foundation for an enormous family of Rolex movements.
The 3135 is one of the best examples of evolutionary engineering in watchmaking.
Engineering importance: 9.5/10
- Design: Replaced the older column-wheel Caliber 321 with a simpler, more reliable shuttle-cam mechanism.
- Frequency: Beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour (vph).
- Jewels: Featured 17 jewels initially, updated to 18 jewels in 1993.
- Finish: Used unplated or copper-plated brass components.
- Performance: Both run at 21,600 vph and offer exceptional, field-tested reliability.
- Aesthetics: The 861 has a raw brass/copper look inside, while the 1861 has a clean, silver rhodium appearance.

ROLEX 15xx - eg 1510, 1520, 1530, 1540
- Case and Bracelet: It features a 36mm angular steel case with sharp geometric edges and a solid-link integrated steel bracelet, echoing 1970s sports watch designs like the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. [1, 2, 3]

Seiko 7S26 — the Japanese revolution
The Seiko 7S26 doesn't have Geneva stripes or hand-polished anglage.
But historically, it may be more important than many movements costing 100× as much.
It powered enormous numbers of:
- Seiko 5 watches
- Seiko divers
- affordable mechanical watches
- Production: 50million
- 21 jewels

It demonstrated that mechanical watches could be manufactured on an enormous scale at remarkably low cost.
The 7S26 helped keep mechanical watchmaking alive at the mass-market level.
Zenith El Primero — the high-beat revolution
The Zenith El Primero is one of the legendary movements.
Introduced in 1969, it was one of the first automatic chronographs and the first commercially successful high-frequency automatic chronograph, running at:
36,000 vibrations per hour
That gives it a 5 Hz balance frequency and allows timing to 1/10 second.
Its importance becomes even greater when you consider that Zenith continued developing the architecture for decades.

- Jewels: 21 jewels (standard modern versions)
- Frequency: 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz)

Omega 8500 — modern industrial haute horlogerie
The Omega 8500 represented a major change in how a large Swiss manufacturer could approach movement development.
It incorporated:
- Co-Axial escapement
- free-sprung balance
- twin barrels
- 60-hour power reserve
- anti-magnetic developments in later generations
- extensive use of modern manufacturing technology
Its significance isn't necessarily that the 8500 is the greatest movement ever.
Rather, it demonstrated that advanced mechanical watch technology could be manufactured at industrial scale.

- Thickness: 2.50mm
- Jewels: 7 jewels
- Battery: Uses a No. 371 (SR920SW) battery cell
- Hand Sizes: Hour 1.20mm, Minute 0.70mm, Sweep Second 0.20mm
- Display: Analog display with central hours, minutes, seconds, and a date window (typically at 3:00 or 6:00).
- EOL Indicator: Features an End-of-Life (EOL) function where the second hand jumps every two seconds to signal a low battery.
- Status: The movement has been discontinued by ETA, making New Old Stock (NOS) parts and replacements increasingly valuable for repairing vintage watches from the 1990s and 2000s (such as certain TAG Heuer and Maurice Lacroix models)

Jaeger-LeCoultre 920 — the ultra-thin masterpiece
The JLC 920 is one of my personal favourites.
Introduced in 1967, it was extraordinarily thin at approximately 2.45 mm despite being an automatic.
The movement was supplied to:
- Patek Philippe
- Audemars Piguet
- Vacheron Constantin
The fascinating thing is that these brands used their own finishing and modifications while the underlying JLC architecture remained extraordinarily sophisticated.
The AP Royal Oak 2121 is a direct descendant
- Introduction: Released in the 1950s by the Swiss watchmaking company Unitas (which later became part of the ETA division under the Swatch Group). [1, 2]
- Pocket Watch Roots: Originally built as a pocket watch (Lepine) movement, its large diameter made it perfect for modern oversized wristwatches, pilot (flieger) watches, and military-style timepieces. [1, 2, 3, 4]
- Modern Status: It remains a staple of the watch industry, used both in factory form and as a heavily decorated base for independent watchmakers. [1, 2]

- King of manual wind
- It's a basic movement often used to train new watchmakers
- Due to the expiration of the original patents, high-quality clones of the 6497—most notably the Seagull ST3600—are widely produced and popular for custom watch builds, repairs, and horology training.
- It's a really big calibre - easy to work on
- Diameter: 36.6 mm (16.5 lignes).
- Thickness: 4.5 mm.
- Jewels: Typically 17 jewels.
- Frequency: Standard versions run at 18,000 vph (2.5 Hz), while modern updates like the 6497-2 run at a faster 21,600 vph (3 Hz).
- Power Reserve: Around 40 to 46 hours for standard (-1) models, and up to 53 hours for higher-grade (-2) versions.
- Subdial Placement: The 6497 features its small seconds subdial at the 6 o'clock position, whereas its sibling, the Unitas 6498 Watch Movement, places the small seconds at the 9 o'clock position relative to the crown. [1]
