King Seiko history, etc

 King Seiko is one of the most interesting chapters in Japanese mechanical watchmaking, partly because it was effectively Seiko's second high-end mechanical watchmaking programme alongside Grand Seiko.

The easiest way to understand it is:

Grand Seiko = Suwa Seikosha's pursuit of ultimate precision.
King Seiko = Daini Seikosha's pursuit of precision + sharp Tokyo design + value.

They were competing internally, and that rivalry helped drive Seiko's extraordinary mechanical development during the 1960s.

1. The beginning — 1961

King Seiko appeared in 1961, only one year after Grand Seiko.

The important organisational point is that Seiko had two major watchmaking factories:

  • Suwa Seikosha in Nagano
  • Daini Seikosha in Kameido, Tokyo

Daini became responsible for the King Seiko programme, while Suwa developed Grand Seiko.

Seiko itself describes the two as taking parallel paths toward high-end mechanical watchmaking, with Grand Seiko particularly focused on precision and King Seiko developing a distinctive Tokyo design identity.

The first King Seiko was a relatively conservative watch:

  • manual winding
  • 25 jewels
  • slim case
  • sharply defined hands
  • substantial applied markers
  • relatively restrained dress-watch appearance

It was positioned as a high-grade Japanese luxury watch, rather than an ordinary Seiko. Its original price was around ¥12,000–15,000, roughly comparable to the starting salary of a university graduate at the time.


2. The breakthrough — 1964 and the 44KS

This is where King Seiko becomes really interesting to collectors.

The 44KS appeared in 1964.

The 44 family was a manual-winding movement that became one of the defining movements of King Seiko. The 44KS period is arguably the golden age of vintage King Seiko.

The basic architecture was:

44 → 4402 → 4420

with different versions and specifications appearing through the period.

Why the 44KS matters

It combines several things that enthusiasts love:

  • manual winding
  • relatively thin construction
  • robust architecture
  • excellent timekeeping potential
  • beautiful 1960s cases
  • extremely distinctive dial furniture
  • early expression of the design language that would become associated with Seiko's high-end watches

And there is an important connection here:

44KS vs 44GS

The 44KS and 44GS belong to the same broad 44 movement family, but they shouldn't be thought of as simply the same watch with different names.

The Grand Seiko 44GS became famous for the design language associated with the later Grammar of Design, while King Seiko developed its own interpretation of sharp Japanese watch design.

This period is where the two Seiko houses really start to diverge stylistically.

3. 1965 — the KSK changes everything

If you ask me to nominate the single most important vintage King Seiko, I'd probably choose the:

King Seiko KSK — 1965

This is the watch that established the visual identity of King Seiko.

The KSK introduced the features that enthusiasts now immediately associate with King Seiko:

Sharp angular case

Rather than the rounded dress-watch cases common at the time, the KSK used:

  • broad flat surfaces
  • sharply faceted lugs
  • strong edges
  • contrasting polished/brushed surfaces

This was very modern for 1965.

The famous 12 o'clock marker

The 12 o'clock index is particularly distinctive.

It has a textured/knurled appearance inspired by the decoration found on luxury cigarette lighters and other objects of the period. Seiko specifically identifies this feature as one of the KSK's defining characteristics.

Hacking seconds

This is technically important.

The KSK introduced a hacking seconds mechanism: pulling the crown stops the seconds hand.

That allows the wearer to synchronise the watch to a reference time.

For a Japanese mechanical watch of this period, that was an impressive practical feature.

Seiko itself highlights the KSK's hacking seconds and water resistance as important advances.


4. King Seiko's philosophy: accuracy without Swiss pricing

This is an important part of the story.

King Seiko wasn't intended to be simply a cheaper Grand Seiko.

Rather, Daini was trying to produce a high-performance Japanese luxury watch that could compete with Swiss watches.

Seiko's historical material describes subsequent King Seiko models achieving standards certified by the Japan Chronometer Inspection Institute and positioning the watches against high-end Swiss watches.

This led to increasingly sophisticated movements.

And this brings us to one of the great eras of Japanese mechanical watchmaking.


5. The 45KS — the Hi-Beat revolution

Around 1968, King Seiko moved into the 45 movement family.

45KS

This is where King Seiko becomes technically serious.

The 45 was:

manual winding + 36,000 vibrations per hour

That's 5 Hz.

At the time, 36,000 vph was cutting-edge mechanical-watch technology.

The advantage of a higher beat rate is that the balance oscillates more rapidly, potentially allowing better averaging of small disturbances.

But there's a price:

  • greater friction
  • greater wear
  • more demanding lubrication
  • more demanding manufacturing
  • greater sensitivity to servicing

It was essentially a race toward high-frequency mechanical precision.

Seiko specifically identifies the 1969 45KCM as its first King Seiko-branded model with a 36,000-vph movement.


6. 45KCM — the chronometer era

One particularly interesting version is:

45KCM

KCM = King Seiko Calendar Chronometer

This was a serious precision watch.

It combined:

  • 45-series Hi-Beat movement
  • manual winding
  • calendar
  • chronometer-level positioning
  • 36,000 vph
  • more sophisticated case design

The case also became somewhat more sculpted and curved compared with the very angular earlier models. Seiko describes it as introducing a more curved form while retaining the characteristic faceted detailing.

This was effectively King Seiko saying:

We can make a genuinely high-precision mechanical watch.


7. King Seiko vs Grand Seiko — the fascinating rivalry

This is probably the most interesting part of the entire story.

Think of it almost as:

Suwa

Grand Seiko

versus

Daini

King Seiko

They were separate engineering organisations inside Seiko.

And they were competing.

That competition encouraged development of:

  • higher beat rates
  • better regulation
  • improved hairsprings
  • better mainsprings
  • shock resistance
  • better case construction
  • improved manufacturing tolerances
  • better finishing
  • increasingly sophisticated automatic mechanisms

The rivalry ultimately helped Seiko develop into one of the world's most technically capable mechanical-watch manufacturers.


8. The 56KS — the interesting crossover

Then things get complicated.

The 56KS generation is particularly interesting because the 56-series movement family was associated with Suwa, rather than Daini.

The 56 movement family was used across:

  • King Seiko
  • Grand Seiko
  • Lord Matic
  • chronometer models

The 56 family moved King Seiko toward automatic winding and 28,800 vph.

This is an important transition.

The 56-series architecture was much more modern than the early manual-winding King Seikos.

56KS characteristics

Typically:

  • automatic winding
  • 28,800 vph
  • date/day complications on many models
  • quick-setting functions
  • compact architecture
  • relatively thin movement

This generation is sometimes overlooked because collectors tend to focus on the spectacular 44KS and 45KS.

But technically, the 56 generation is extremely important.


9. The design evolution

You can almost see Japanese watch design evolving through King Seiko.

Early 1960s

Automatic + integrated modern styling

VANAC

And VANAC is where things get wild.


10. King Seiko VANAC — the crazy 1970s

The VANAC series began in 1972.

If traditional King Seiko is:

VANAC is:

1970s Japanese design explosion

VANAC featured:

  • extremely angular cases
  • integrated-looking bracelets
  • bright colours
  • faceted surfaces
  • unusual dial textures
  • geometric shapes
  • highly reflective finishing

It was radically different from the conservative KSK.

And it was actually quite forward-looking.

The current King Seiko collection describes VANAC as having introduced vivid colours and innovative multifaceted designs in response to the increasing appetite for stylistic diversity in the 1970s.


11. Quartz kills the mechanical King Seiko

Then came 1969.

The quartz revolution began.

Seiko's Astron was launched in 1969, and quartz technology rapidly transformed the watch industry.

The implications for King Seiko were enormous.

Why spend considerable money manufacturing:

  • complicated mechanical movements
  • high-frequency balances
  • precision hairsprings
  • chronometer-grade components

when a quartz oscillator could provide dramatically better everyday accuracy at decreasing cost?

Mechanical King Seiko production gradually declined.

By the 1970s the collection was effectively coming to an end, and production was eventually stopped. Seiko explicitly connects the decline of King Seiko with the arrival of quartz watches.


12. Then... nothing for about 50 years

This is what makes the modern story interesting.

King Seiko essentially disappeared.

Grand Seiko eventually became an independent premium brand.

King Seiko became a cult vintage name among Seiko collectors.

And the KSK's design became increasingly appreciated.

Then:

2022 — King Seiko returns

Seiko revived King Seiko after a hiatus of more than 50 years.

The company chose the 1965 KSK as the principal design inspiration. 

The modern watches retain:

  • sharp faceted lugs
  • broad hands
  • faceted indices
  • distinctive 12 o'clock marker
  • box-shaped crystal
  • strong case geometry

but use modern materials and manufacturing.

The original acrylic crystal becomes:

boxed sapphire crystal

and modern polishing techniques produce the highly reflective surfaces.

Seiko describes the modern cases as using both mirror and hairline finishing and Zaratsu polishing.


13. Modern King Seiko movements

The modern collection is particularly interesting because Seiko has used several levels of movement.

6R35

The more accessible King Seiko models use variants of the 6R family.

Characteristics:

  • automatic
  • 21,600 vph
  • approximately 70-hour power reserve
  • robust
  • relatively inexpensive to manufacture

This is more of a workhorse movement.


6L35

This is where modern King Seiko gets much more interesting.

The 6L35 is a slim automatic movement.

It has:

  • 28,800 vph
  • approximately 45-hour power reserve
  • thin architecture
  • more refined positioning than the 6R family

Seiko describes the 6L35 as its thinnest automatic mechanical movement in its current lineup.

Current KSK models use the 6L35, with Seiko quoting accuracy of approximately +15/-10 seconds per day.

This is an important distinction when comparing modern King Seiko models.


14. And now — 8L45

The latest development is particularly interesting.

King Seiko has now moved into the 8L45.

This is a substantially higher-end movement.

It offers:

  • 28,800 vph
  • approximately 72-hour power reserve
  • stated accuracy of +10/-5 sec/day
  • longer/thinner mainspring
  • enhanced robustness
  • more sophisticated finishing

Seiko describes it as the most accurate mechanical movement currently appearing in a Seiko mechanical watch.

The new VANAC uses the 8L45.

That effectively creates a modern movement hierarchy:

The 8L45 is a very different proposition from the basic 6R.


15. Technology beyond the movement

King Seiko isn't just about movements.

Several Seiko technologies are important.

Diashock

Seiko's shock-protection system protects the balance pivots from impacts.

It is particularly important because the balance is one of the most delicate components in a mechanical watch.

SPRON

Seiko developed proprietary alloys for:

  • mainsprings
  • hairsprings

with emphasis on:

Zaratsu polishing

This is particularly relevant to King Seiko's design.

Large planes that catch light.

One of the strongest visual signatures.

4. Strong dial furniture

Especially the broad indices and distinctive 12 o'clock marker.

5. Thinness

King Seiko often tries to achieve a powerful visual presence without becoming physically thick.

That's why the KSK remains such an important design.

It isn't simply "vintage Seiko".

It's one of the foundations of modern Japanese luxury-watch design.

The classic mechanical King Seiko.

Probably the most important vintage family for collectors.

4. 56KS

The underrated technological transition.

Automatic + 28,800 vph + much more modern movement architecture.

5. VANAC

The design wildcard.

Absolutely fascinating if you like 1970s watches.

6. Modern 6L35 KSK

The best modern interpretation of the original concept.

Especially if you value thinness and vintage proportions.

7. Modern 8L45 VANAC

The modern technical flagship direction.

This is arguably where King Seiko is becoming something more than simply a retro reissue.


The really important takeaway

King Seiko isn't simply "Grand Seiko's cheaper sibling."

That's a misleading way of looking at it.

It was one half of a remarkable internal Japanese watchmaking competition:

Daini Seikosha → King Seiko → sharp design + high precision

versus

Suwa Seikosha → Grand Seiko → extreme precision + refined design

The 1960s–70s period, particularly the 44KS → KSK → 45KS → 56KS → VANAC progression, is where the story becomes fascinating from a horological perspective.

And the 45KS 36,000-vph movement deserves special attention: it puts King Seiko directly into the history of the Japanese Hi-Beat movement race, alongside the 45GS and eventually Seiko's later 61GS/Hi-Beat developments.
