George Daniels

Dr. George Daniels (1926–2011) was a legendary English horologist, inventor, and master watchmaker widely considered one of the greatest independent watchmakers of the 20th century. [1, 2, 3]
He was one of the few craftsmen in modern history capable of designing and building a complete mechanical watch entirely by hand—including the movement, case, and dial. [1]
Key Innovations & Achievements
  • The Co-Axial Escapement: Daniels' most famous invention, patented in 1980. It drastically reduced friction in mechanical watch movements and eliminated the need for frequent lubrication. Omega adopted it for commercial serial production in 1999. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Mastery by Hand: He mastered all 32 individual disciplines required to build a watch from scratch, working from his workshop on the Isle of Man. [1, 2]
  • The Apprentice Legacy: He worked closely with his apprentice and heir apparent, Roger W. Smith, who continues the tradition of handmade independent watchmaking. [1, 2]
Iconic Timepieces
  • The Space Traveller: A multi-complication pocket watch designed to calculate both mean solar time and sidereal time (space-time), considered one of his greatest masterworks. [1]
  • The Millennium Series: A limited series of 48 yellow gold wristwatches built to celebrate the industrialization of the co-axial escapement. [1]
  • The Anniversary Series: Created to commemorate the anniversary of his co-axial escapement invention, finished in collaboration with Roger Smith. [1, 2]
  • The Blue: One of only a small number of custom wristwatches attributed to Daniels, assembled in his workshop with Roger Smith
